  • Introduction

Sweetwater FarmSweetwater Farm Bed and Breakfast is a tranquil haven situated on fifty acres in the historic Brandywine Valley of Glen Mills, Pennsylvania. Our original Quaker farmhouse dates to 1734, and the Hemphill family added a magnificent Georgian addition in 1815. Sweetwater Farm housed the British after the battle of the Brandywine in 1777, was a safe house for the Underground Railroad, and the farmhouse’s third floor was a Civil War infirmary.

New to Sweetwater Farm is the addition of Grace Winery. Our five acre estate vineyard is just off the Manor House. The back porch is the perfect location to watch the sun sink behind the vineyard while enjoying our first vintage, a delightful 2009 Chardonnay.

Enjoy our gourmet country breakfast each morning in either our elegant dining room or, when the weather warms, on the back patio overlooking the back pastures. Make yourself at home in our delightfully cozy den, the parlor or the billiards room, all with working fireplaces.

Enjoy A Delicious Breakfast Each MorningWe’re just minutes from Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, and all the Brandywine Valley attractions.
Our 50–acre historic estate features fourteen guest rooms: three in the original 1734 Quaker farmhouse wing and four in the 1815 Georgian wing. The original carriage house, greenhouse and caretaker’s cottage have all been transformed into seven guest cottages, five of which are pet– and child–friendly.

Other amenities for your perfect getaway are a swimming pool, outdoor hot tub, golf chipping range, nine-hole disc golf course, private massage room, fitness room, walking trail and a friendly family of horses, sheep and goats.

  • Grace Winery and Vineyard

Grace Winery is the newest addition to the Sweetwater Farm family. The idea for the winery came about from the question, “What are you going to do with the old barn?” which was posed to us many times over the years. The answer varied depending on who was asked, but the winery concept always seemed to be part of the answer. In 2007, a recipient of the answer helped push us along by arranging a meeting with a group of people in the wine industry. Next time we turned around we had ordered vines and a tractor was delivered. The name Grace Winery and the dragonfly are a tribute to proprietor Chris Le Vine’s sister Gracie, who owned Sweetwater Farm prior to Chris and his wife Vicki taking over the property in 1999.

    The Barn

The barn originally dates back to the 1750s. It was used as a malting barn to malt barley for distilled spirits, and over the years it was altered many times to be used for livestock, storage and parties. By the mid–2000s it was in disrepair. The renovations began in December 2008 and were completed in April 2010.

    The Winery & Vineyeard

The Fruit of the VineThe vineyard consists of approximately 9000 vines over 5 acres. The first phase of the vineyard was planted by hand in April 2008 and the second phase was laser planted a year later. All of our vines were purchased from California. The majority of our grapes are vinifera grapes, meaning they originated in Europe.

    Our growing varieties include:

    • Chardonnay
    • Pinot Gris
    • Vidal Blanc
    • Merlot
    • Cabernet Sauvignon
    • Cabernet Franc
    • Petit Verdot

The FarmThe vineyard is managed by Sean Kramer with help from noted vineyard consultant Lucie Morton. The wine production and tasting room are housed in the newly renovated bank barn on the grounds of Sweetwater Farm, where the boutique winery will produce approximately 1500 cases of wine per year. Our small–batch wines are created using a combination of the new tools and technology and the old customs of winemaking. Our stainless steel fermentation tanks were custom–made in South Africa for our facility. Our barrels are made of the finest oak from France and the United States. The wines are crafted by winemaker Sean Kramer under the watchful eye of winery consultant John Levenberg.
