Devils Lake in Lincoln City, Oregon is a naturally shallow, coastal lake.  It has the distinction of  intersecting the 45th parallel, the mark half way between the equator and the North Pole. Another interesting thing to note is from it, flows the D River which is the world's shortest river which measure only 120 feet!

 Legend OF Devils Lake:
The following story is a compilation of information supplied by Chief William Depoe, who told the legend of Devils Lake during the second annual Grass Carp Festival in September of 1987. Legends, much like a good wine, almost always improve with age. Such is the case of the legend of Devils Lake.
   The Siletz Indians were once fond of Indian Bay—or Devils Lake as it is now known—before it became inhabited with evil spirits. They hunted their game in the nearby forests and made their homes upon the scenic shores of the quiet lake. Their warriors, however, were lost to the evil spirits of the lake. As legend has it, members of the tribe used to meet on the shores of the lake during the moon of abundance to celebrate. Young braves would demonstrate feats of daring and strength to win the heart of the maiden of their choice.
   As the legend continues, a certain chief Fleetfoot despaired of winning the heart of the maiden he had chosen. In order to impress his young love, he dispatched his braves in the canoes out on the calm waters of the lake. Yet tragedy was awaiting the braves. As the moonlight shone down upon the serene lake, legend says, the waters began to churn and bubble. Giant tentacles emerged from the chaotic waters and wrapped around the startled braves and their canoes pulling them down into the murky depths. "Legend has it that the lake is quick to turn bad towards people," Chief William Depoe said, "Like a giant snake, it can raise up and pull beneath its surface whatever might be traveling across."
   In order to pacify the great devil so the Indians could resume their peaceful existence on the lake, the legend says, the Indians held great feasts and rituals on the shores of the lake. The drums vibrated and the voices of the Indian people echoed their melancholy beat until the dawn broke upon the horizon. At that time, the devil was said to rear its ugly head and then the sacrifice was made. It is unclear exactly what form this sacrifice took, whether it was maiden or beast, but the offering was the only method by which to satiate the hunger of the devil that inhabited the lake. "Legend has it that the lake could cause bad things to happen to people. To avoid that, the Indian people would offer valuables to the lake before crossing it," Chief Depoe said. "In that way, they showed respect to the power that it possesses."
  The hunger of the spirit that inhabits the lake has long since been appeased, but the legend itself grows with each retelling and the mystery behind the lake’s name remains unsolved. Today, the legend maintains, that those who cross the waters in the moonlit chill of night will still feel a tingle of fear as they cross the center of the lake.

This Oregon coast activity was built in 1926. The Astoria Column is a unique work of art that was built with financing by the Great Northern Railway and Vincent Astor, the great-grandson of John Jacob Astor, in commemoration of the city's role in the family's business history.

The 125-foot tall column stands atop 600-foot Coxcomb Hill and includes an interior spiral staircase that leads to an observation deck at the top.The column has 14 25-foot long scenes commemorating important historic moments in the Northwest. The view from the top offers panoramic scenes of the Pacific Ocean, Oregon and Washington coasts, the Columbia River and the city of Astoria.

Hug Point - Oregon Coast Activity #21 of the 101 Things to do on the Oregon Coast .

What a great Oregon coast activity this one is! Before the completion of highway 101 was finished in the late 1930, travelers driving down the Oregon coast, whether on horseback, horse and carts, stagecoaches or later motorized vehicles, the main road was actually the beach! Imagine how difficult it was when confronted with one of our many headlands.

Hug Point got its name because travelers wanting to get from Cannon Beach south to Arch Cape had to wait for low tide and hug the point to get past it. It’s a steep, rugged ridge of the Coast Range that thrusts right out into the surf, to its very edge. Stagecoaches could maneuver on the sand, but when automobiles entered the picture, something had to be done. Sometime after the turn of the century, there was a small 'road' blasted into the rock which made transit from one community to another much easier.




Today, you can still see the remains of the blasted road into the rock.

Hug Point is a great place to explore sea caves and a seasonal waterfall.

Hug Point and Hug Point Falls is found in Hug Point State Park, which is found a little less than 5 1/2 miles south of Cannon Beach and the turn off for Ecola State Park. From the parking area, follow the stairs down to the beach, then head right towards the headland jutting into the crashing tide. If the tide is high, the ocean will lap up against the headland, preventing access to the falls. When the tide is low, simply walk around the headland to the falls.

Fort Clatsop - 101 Oregon Coast Activities 14 Apr 2013, 12:00 pm

101 Things To Do On The Oregon Coast - #20 Fort Clatsop

Fort Clatsop was the encampment of the Lewis and Clark Expedition near the mouth of the Columbia River during the winter of 1805-1806. Located approximately 5 miles southwest of Astoria, the fort was the last encampment of the Corps of Discovery before embarking on their return trip east to St. Louis.

 A replica of the fort was constructed for the sesquicentennial in 1955 and lasted for fifty years. In 2005 a fire severely damaged the fort and it was reconstructed in 2006, using plans notated by Captain William Clark. The original camp site was selected by Captain Lewis and construction took place over the month of December, with the expedition moving in by Christmas Day 1805. They remained at the fort for three months, until March 23, 1806, when they departed on their return trip home.

 The center features ranger-led programs, costumed rangers in the fort (summer months) and trailheads for the Fort To Sea Trail and Netul River Trail as well as restrooms and a picnic area.




Once the fort was built, the Corps was able to explore the area which took them to Sunset Beach and Seaside.  A 6.5-mile trail now runs much of the same forest, fields and dunes that the Corps traveled. The Fort To Sea Trail wends its way through the woods south of Fort Clatsop to Sunset Beach on the Pacific Ocean, covering land that once was home to the Clatsop Indians who helped the Corps.

Croissant French Toast From Sandlake Country Inn

When choosing where to stay along the beautiful Oregon Coast, consider choosing a bed and breakfast if you're interested in a fabulous breakfast. I'm sure you've driven and seen the signs in front of all those nameless hotels and motels touting their "Free Breakfast". Most of the time their "free breakfast" includes foods in plastic wrappers, weak coffee and maybe some reconstituted scrambled eggs. Try finding a place to sit and eat in their 'breakfast room'! You won't find that at any bed and breakfast on the Oregon coast, or anywhere else in Oregon For help finding a quality bed and breakfast, just go to the Oregon Bed and Breakfast Guild website (obbg.org) where you'll find some amazingly wonderful b&bs that have been inspected and approved by the Guild, and all with complimentary breakfasts you won't soon forget.

Here at Sandlake Country Inn we do breakfast a little different than most B&Bs. Our 4 course breakfast and home roasted coffee or other hot drink of choice is delivered outside your door! We're the Oregon Coast B&B for those people who crave a bit more privacy in the morning. If you can't make it to a Bed and Breakfast, but want to indulge in a fabulous breakfast, just make this easy recipe for your loved one or family and they'll feel as spoiled as if they were at a bed and breakfast!

1. Slice croissants in half lengthwise.
2. Whisk together milk, eggs, and vanilla. Pour into a shallow dish. Dip croissant halves into egg mixture, coating well. Let soak in mixture for several minutes. I poke small holes in the bottom and top of the croissant to help absorb more liquid.
3. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add four croissant halves, and cook about 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Place cooked croissants on baking tray and keep warm in oven while cooking remainder of the croissants.
4. Repeat procedure with remaining butter and croissant halves. 
5. Place bottom of croissant on plate, spoon berry sauce over bottom, place top croissant over berries and top with whipped cream.

1. In a saucepan, bring water to a boil.
2. Add berries to water and bring to boil
3. Cook until berries cook down, approximately 5 minutes
4. To thicken sauce, pour cornstarch/water mixture in saucepan with berries and bring to a boil. Cook an additional 3-4 minutes. If you prefer a thicker sauce, use more cornstarch/water.
5. Use hot or refrigerate sauce which will thicken more when cold.
