Herren House is a special place -- just a block from downtown and a mile from paradise.
Herren House is a unique 19th century guest lodge which has been completely restored and refurbished to combine gracious Victorian decor and vintage antique furnishings with the most modern of amenities, including central air conditioning. Six spacious guest rooms -- one equipped for wheelchair accommodation -- meet any taste, need or fancy. (There's even an octagon-shaped bedroom with an unusual, turn-of-the-century, 48-pane window.) Each room has its own sitting area and a private bathroom. All offer distinctive touches like original works of art and stunning quilts.
The gardens are a bouquet of seasonal colors and herbal fragrances. Sprawling wrap-around porches and latticed garden shelters offer quiet evening relaxation or a shady respite from the day's activities. An overhead fan and piped in music in the gazebo will soothe you as you wile away a summer afternoon with a cool drink.
You can't have a great bed and breakfast without a great breakfast. At Herren House breakfast is exceptional, complete with music and casual conversation with the innkeepers and other guests. It begins always with a fresh fruit start course and then includes choices ranging from eggs done to your taste to waffles and delectable French toast. Fine coffees and tea enhance the meal. Afternoon refreshments are enjoyed most often on the spacious wraparound porch or in the garden.
Herren House has been known for its Carolina hospitality since 1897, when it was named "Savannah." it takes its current name from its second owner, Mollie Herren (circa 1918).
The structure has undergone extensive renovation, with loving care given to such distinctive elements as the original woodwork, fireplace fronts and mantel-pieces that grace its rooms, along with other "period" details which have either been restored or painstakingly replicated. It is truly a showcase of Victorian charm.
Innkeepers Gerry Shields and Roland Labadan maintain the elegant traditions of Herren House, while contributing their own distinctive gifts from operating two former inns in Virginia and extensive experience living and working in Europe
