Tis' The Season
The Town of Manteo will officially kickoff the 2012 holiday season on Friday, November 30 in front of the historic dare county courthouse downtown. A Grand Illumination Tree Lighting ceremony, a musical celebration of the indefinable spirit of Christmas joy and hope will commemorate over 400 years in the lives of Roanoke Island residents. This year's night of festivities will begin at 6PM on Queen Elizabeth Street next to the beautiful downtown Manteo waterfront.
The holiday cheer continues on Saturday, December 1st at 10:30AM with the 41st Annual "Big Little Town Parade" in downtown Manteo, complete with bands, floats and all the trappings of the season. The Grand Marshal this year is Marjalene Thomas who first performed with the Lost Colony in 1938 and throughout the years has played many of the female roles in the show. After the parade join the
Manteo Elementary PTA for pictures with Santa at the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum Boat House.
As Saturday winds down and the cool crisp evening approaches the perfect warm spot is The White Doe Inn also in downtown Manteo very close to the waterfront. We are currently gearing up for our Winter Nights Holiday Lights package. The package includes tickets to the Elizabethan Garden Winter Lights Annual Illumination Event and comes with a 20% discount on bedchambers including a complimentary bottle of bubbly. The package is only available for the following dates: Dec.1st, 3rd, 4th-8th, 11th - 15th, 18th- 22nd and Jan. 2nd - 5th. Halloween Past, Seasons Changing 5 Nov 2012, 12:13 pm
Halloween was a good time here at The White Doe Inn for our guests. Kids were coming from all directions on Sir Walter Raleigh to see and talk with the Big Pumpkin, and pick up treats. Our Littlest Innkeeper was on hand greeting all the witches and goblins and making sure everyone was getting just the right amount of treats. She made Halloween a fun time for all!
In the late 17th early 18th century the colony of North Carolina was considered a "place which receives pirates" and they continue to be popular especially on Halloween, as they are an intriguing part of our coastal heritage on the Outer Banks. Below is a photo from the 1961 Hatteras Island Pirate Jamboree. The first person to name everyone in the photograph will receive one free night stay at The White Doe Inn. The Big Pumpkin Welcomes Guests at The White Doe Inn 28 Oct 2012, 8:39 am
Every October, the Big Pumpkin peers out from the porch at The White Doe Inn awaiting the arrival of all the little ghosts and goblins trick or treating on Sir Walter Raleigh Street. All along the street are gourd-like orange fruits inscribed with ghoulish faces and illuminated by candles. This a sure sign that the Halloween season has arrived in downtown Manteo. The Big Pumpkin is an annual feature here at The White Doe Inn for all to enjoy.
The practice of decorating “jack-o’-lanterns”— the name comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack—originated in Ireland, where large turnips and potatoes served as an early canvas. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America, home of the pumpkin, and it became an integral part of Halloween festivities.
Just down the road from the White Doe Inn is The Island Farm where they too are getting into the spirit of Halloween with Evening Lantern tours. Join costumed interpreters on a night-time journey into the home of a grieving widow and listen to stories of the farm’s former residents. Then travel by lantern light to the final resting place in an 1800s graveyard.
As Halloween evening starts to wind down in Manteo coming back to relax with a bottle of wine, by the fireplace or take a warm bath with a glass of champagne in the privacy of your bedchamber only to wake up well rested to a lovely 4-course breakfast to start your day!

As the cool crisp days of fall arrive and days begin to draw shorter what better time to think about a quiet relaxing stay at The White Doe Inn with just a short drive on the island to see the exquisite fall colors at The Elizabethan Gardens. White Doe Inn’s New Chef
White Doe Inn is delighted to announce the appointment of former Sous Chef Joshua Thom Morris of Columbia, South Carolina as the Inn’s new Executive Chef. Chef Morris will carry on White Doe’s tradition of developing and presenting an array of exceptional breakfast cuisine, unlike any you’ll find on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Our new exec-chef has put together his own cohesive culinary menu to assure the highest quality food and service for every guest, every day of every week.
Morris prides himself as a hands-on chef who gets involved in all aspects of the culinary experience from freshness to presentation. Morris began his culinary journey at a young age and acquired knowledge and techniques from a traditional French chef which included extensive sauce making and a cutting edge preparation of protein dishes. In recent years, Morris has instructed classes of 15-20 students on the preparation of classic innovative cuisine with a wide range of cooking techniques and knife skills.
Morris created, owned and operated The Black Dog Market, a retail speciality store and delicatessen in Columbia, South Carolina where he prepared from-scratch menu items daily, focusing on the use of fresh local products and ingredients.
“Joshua has a very amicable personality and enjoys interacting with our guests” said Inn owner Bebe Woody.” He has already made a difference in the Inn’s ability to respond to the special needs of our guests”. In response Joshua said “I look forward to growing with the Inn, focusing on quality ingredients with a simple yet elegant approach to the preparation”.
