The King's Daughters Inn

204 N Buchanan Boulevard, DURHAM, North Carolina 27701
Innkeeper(s): Colin & Deanna Crossman

  • Introduction

The King’s Daughters Inn began a new chapter of its history in April 2009, after being transformed into a seventeen room boutique Bed & Breakfast. Built in the 1920’s with funds donated by the Duke family, The King’s Daughters Home provided dormitory-style housing for single, aging women. After closing its doors in 2006, new owners Colin and Deanna Crossman marshaled the 17,000 square foot building through an extensive green renovation to create the luxurious inn that stands here today.

    Location

Overlooking the stately oak trees of Duke’s East Campus, The King’s Daughters Inn occupies an ideal location in Durham , NC - a short walk to Duke University, downtown Durham, Brightleaf Square, and 9th street; a short drive to Research Triangle Park, Raleigh-Durham Airport, and the new Durham Performing Arts Center. Though close to so many lively urban districts, it’s blends seamlessly into Trinity Park, one of Durham’s oldest, most established, most walkable urban neighborhoods. This location gives our Inn the feel of an urban retreat.

    Experience

The King’s Daughters Inn offers the amenities of a first-class hotel with the intimacy of a B&B. Enjoy high-speed wireless internet throughout, ample event and meeting space, and spacious common areas for relaxing and socializing. Savor gourmet breakfasts, afternoon tea, and evening wine and scotch. Retreat to your room for our turn-down service with locally-made artisan chocolates and Port. Let our concierge share an insider’s opinion on the best restaurants and activities Durham has to offer...and then borrow one of our bicycles to get there in style!

    Rooms and Rates

No two rooms at the King’s Daughters Inn are alike. Crafted faithfully from the building’s existing layout, each guestroom or suite has a unique configuration and distinct character. Choose from a wide range of 1920’s styles – from Classic to Art Deco. Though each is distinct, all rooms feature the same full slate of amenities including luxurious robes, triple-sheeted beds, locally produced, all-natural toiletries, phones with personal voicemail, writing desks, flat-screen HDTVs, and individual climate control. You can just as easily connect with the world as tune it out.

As part of our efforts to preserve the historic character of the building/King’s Daughters Home, we maintained its original circulation patterns. By combining and connecting adjacent rooms, we consolidated the original 29 bedrooms and 6 shared bathrooms into 17 rooms and suites - each with a private bath, each unique.

We highlighted the differences between rooms through the use of color, texture, pattern, and scale. Rooms in the original portion of the building feature classic 1920’s styling, while those in the later addition refer to the more avant-garde, streamlined Art Deco movement of the period.

The challenge comes in choosing exactly the right room for you! To complement the photographs and descriptions, we have included two tools to make your room selection easier:

    • A complete set of floor plans to better gauge a room’s orientation, configuration, and relationship to the rest of the Inn: 1st Floor, 2nd Floor, and Basement (event spaces only).
    • A comparison chart to provide a quick visual reference for determining the differences.

Discounts offered for weeknights (Sunday-Thursday) and off-peak months (July and December). Group rates also available.

    Group Events

With three group event spaces, each distinct in scale and character, we can create just the right ambience for your function. Celebrate weddings, rehearsal dinners, or family reunions; plan conferences, seminars, or awards ceremonies; stage an informal gathering of friends, an afternoon tea-party, or a partners’ retreat. Whatever the nature and scope of your gathering, we will work with you closely to ensure that we share your vision.

    Sustainable Lodging

Three ideals guided the transformation of the King’s Daughter Home into the King’s Daughters Inn: 1) protect and restore the historic architecture for future generations; 2) respect the environment; and 3) incorporate the most current technologies available. Historic preservation and green building practices are fully compatible because both rely on the lightest touch possible. Our commitment to both environmentally responsible building and living drove us to find creative ways to offer our guests sustainable lodging without sacrificing the warmth and charm of a historic inn, or the conveniences of a modern, luxury hotel. Please see our section on sustainable lodging to learn about the many innovative ways we’re saving resources.

  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Samantha Kozub for sharing her own secrets with BBOnline.com!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

We have a wide range of guests that stay with us! The majority of our business revolves around Duke University, from visiting lecturers to Duke parents to couples that met at Duke and want to get married in Durham, many of our guests have Duke ties in one way or another!

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

We are known for our sophisticated, but comfortable decor and delicious breakfast! It is not often you see 17 overnight accommodations decorated with different color schemes, prints and patterns! Of course, our homemade chocolate chip waffles were highlighted in the New York Post, so you know they are delicious! We love the vibe at the Inn - sophisticated comfort. We want you to experience all the amenities of a luxury hotel, but feel comfortable to explore and settle in. Enjoy everything we have to offer at your pace and on your schedule.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

The food! In the past year, Durham has been placed on a national platform several times for having incredible independent restaurants and small businesses. From food trucks to wine stores to bustling restaurants, we have it all and we love to recommend places based on a guest's wants and needs.

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

"I want to move in and never leave." - By the time check out comes around, we want each and every guest to have that feeling!

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

The Duke Lemur Center in the Duke Forest. The Center is the largest population of lemurs outside of Madagascar. You can walk the trail through the forest and watch the lemurs fly through the air above you while a researcher guides the way.

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

We love the fact that there are 3 towns within 25 - 30 minutes of each other (The Triangle).

    Day #1:
Since you can walk almost anywhere in Durham from our location, we would encourage guests to see The Sarah Duke Gardens, Duke Chapel and the Nasher Museum of Art.

    Day #2:
The next day enjoy the small pockets of Durham that has small shops and cute restaurants such as Ninth St., Brightleaf Square and Main Street. That evening a delicious dinner and a show at the Durham Performing Arts Center or catch a baseball game at the Durham Bulls Park (Triple-A Minor League team for the Tampa Bay Rays).

    Day #3:
A day in Raleigh to see the capital building, enjoy one of the many downtown festivals or enjoy the North Carolina Museum of Art or The Marble's Kids Museum.

    Day #4:
A day in Chapel Hill would be a walk around UNC's campus and a walk down Franklin St. and into Carrboro where there are several small music venues to choose from.

There are also several other small towns including Hillsborough or Mebane that have great BBQ joints and little gift shops that have the wonderful small town North Carolina feel that many want to explore and enjoy.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

So many options! We have Brightleaf Square 3 blocks away and Main St. is just beyond that. There are 39 + restaurants within half miles of our location! We eat well!

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

Too many to choose! For a celebration dinner, Four Square restaurant is the owners' favorite. The Federal Pub, Dame's Chicken and Waffles, Vin Rouge French Bistro! We try to learn what our guests love and then point them to the best of what we offer!

Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?

Durham Visitors & Convention Bureau has a great website with lots of resources. For the more local scene, many follow the Durham Socialite or the Independent Weekly for things to do in the area.

How many rooms does your inn have?

We have 17 overnight accommodations including 11 single rooms (sleeps 2) and 6 suites (sleeps up to 4).

    Do you accept pets?

We love animals, but we aren't able to keep them at the Inn. If you want to bring your pet with you, we recommend: www.creaturecomfortsinn.com/

  • Local Attractions

Duke University Campus (across the street)
Well known as one of the nation’s top academic and research institutions, visitors to Duke are often surprised by the physical beauty, serenity and diversity of its campus. Nestled within its 8,600 acres is the Duke Forest, one of the largest continually managed woodlands in the United States with over 30 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. The Sarah P. Duke Gardens’ five miles of walkways and allées wind gracefully among 55 acres of indigenous and non-native flora. The 210-foot tall Duke Chapel, with its gothic-inspired pointed arches and ribbed vaults rises majestically over West Campus. For a truly unique experience (unless you live in Madagascar), visit the Duke Lemur Center, the world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates. Art lovers may want to survey the Nasher Museum of Art’s 13,000+ piece collection including original works by Warhol, Toulouse-Lautrec and Picasso. All of this within minutes of the King’s Daughters Inn. Duke University, Durham, NC 27708. (919) 684-8111, www.duke.edu.

Ninth Street (short walk across Duke's East Campus)
Indy spirit lives on Ninth St., a four block commercial district known for its vibrant street life and conspicuous lack of national chains. Though its proximity to Duke might suggest a student-centered focus, it caters equally, if not more, to local Durhamites. This eclectic collection of shops and restaurants has something for everyone – from tattoos and comic books, to specialty athletic shoes, to fine jewelry and clothing. It also offers a wide variety of ethnic cuisines.

    Brightleaf Square (3 blocks)
Named for the golden-yellow tobacco which for nearly 75 years was aged, cured and fermented within its walls, these two converted brick warehouses and central courtyard are now home to a mix of Durham’s finest eateries and shops. Renovated in 2004, visitors can eat, browse and meander leisurely through the twinkle lit courtyard. Situated between downtown and Duke University, Brightleaf Square is a culinary and commercial centerpiece of Durham’s downtown district. Brightleaf Square, 905 West Main Street, Durham, NC 27701. (919) 682-9229, Brightleaf Square.

Durham Bulls Athletic Park (1 mile)
In 1988, “Bull Durham” instantly transformed the Durham Bulls into a national sensation, but Bulls baseball has been part of Durham’s summer landscape for nearly a century. In 1995, the Bulls, now the Triple-A affiliate for the Tampa Bay Rays, moved into this beautiful new stadium. Designed by the same architects as Camden Yards in Baltimore, its brick façade, manual scoreboard and intimate layout evoke that same classic, old-time ballpark ambience. $10 will get you a seat at field level, but feel free to roam the playground and picnic pavilions, test your skills on the climbing wall, or gauge your pitch speed on radar. The “DBAP” also hosts corporate events and group outings with full catering service; call or visit their website for details. See you at the ballpark! Durham Bulls Athletic Park, 409 Blackwell Street, Durham, NC 27701. (919) 956-BULL, www.dbulls.com.

American Tobacco Historic District (1 mile)
From its formation in 1890, for the American Tobacco Company was for decades the economic engine powering Durham’s economy and a dominant force in the worldwide tobacco industry. With dwindling market share, diversification and a branching out of its operations, American Tobacco finally abandoned its Durham campus in 1987 and the one million square foot property fell into disrepair and decay. Purchased by the Capitol Broadcasting Company in 1998, this National Historic Landmark has undergone a remarkable and inspired transformation into the mixed-use development that stands today. Restored tobacco warehouses are now home to restaurants, bars and businesses which frame a multi-purpose central courtyard and lawn. A ¼ mile stepped waterway bisects the courtyard while above, the iconic Lucky Strike smokestack and water tower punctuate the Durham skyline as they have for decades. This award-winning reclamation project has served as a catalyst for the downtown revival that’s still ongoing, and is a must see for visitors to the “Bull City.” American Tobacco Historic District, 318 Blackwell Street, Durham, NC 27701. (919) 433-1566, www.americantobaccohistoricdistrict.com.

Durham Performing Arts Center (1 mile)
On November 30, 2008, B.B. King opened this magnificent new facility, now the largest performing arts center in the Carolinas. Already receiving accolades for its architecture and acoustics, the 2,700 seat DPAC hosts a variety of cultural events including Broadway musicals, concerts and comedy shows. The performing arts center offers special group programs as well, including pre- and post-show events, priority seating and discount tickets. Within easy walking distance of the American Tobacco Historic District and downtown restaurants, the DPAC has become the crown jewel of Durham’s downtown renaissance. The King’s Daughters Inn is the official Bed & Breakfast of the Durham Performing Arts Center. Durham Performing Arts Center, 123 Vivian Street, Durham, NC 27701. (919) 680-2787, www.dpacnc.com.
