  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Jaynee & Guy Straw for sharing their own secrets with BBOnline.com!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

It's the wonderful quaint city of Canandaigua, which offers historic sites, a culinary center, amazing restaurants and shops, and most within walking distance. Canandaigua is a city, where everyone feels comfortable, it's rich in culture and the arts, and has amazing beautiful restored homes. Of course, we're also part of the Finger lakes Wine Country, with 120 unique wineries.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

We've been told that from the minute guests enter, they feel comfortable, and at home, with all the luxury in a Victorian home. We are fortunate to have very spacious guest rooms, all with private baths, and we offer our guests a full, bountiful breakfast daily, as well as freshly baked treats, beverages, and amenities they enjoy.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

Wineries, wineries, and more wineries, as well as the rich history that the city has, and amazingly beautiful historic sites, such as Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion, and the Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum.

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

Once guests stay, they comment that should they be in this area again, they wouldn't want to stay anywhere else!

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

The natural beauty of the Finger Lakes Region, whether guests enjoy wine and beer tasting, hiking, biking, or sailing. Canandaigua is also one of the cleanest lakes in the country.

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

Book a culinary class at the New York Wine and Culinary Center
Explore the historic sites in the area (may take two days)
    Book a wine tour
Hike to the many waterfalls and natural wonders of the area

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

Yes, yes, and yes... What we like most about our location is that we are in the heart of the historic district, a short walk to historic sites, our vibrant downtown area where guests can enjoy a unique shopping experience, art galleries, antique shops, as well as enjoy the wonderful restaurants.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

It's very hard to chose, since we have so many, but most guests LOVE Nolans on Canandaigua Lake, and we highly recommend it as well.

  • History

The home was built by Thomas Burt in 1820. The smaller, back portion of the house was the original dwelling, with the larger, statelier part of the home, added around 1840. The original owner, Henry F. Penfield, Esquire, practiced from a brick office that existed to the front of the property, where the larger part of the home sits today. A fruit farm consisting of 14 acres were part of the original property.

Sometime in the 1960s or 1970s, the home was converted to apartments, then later housed a real estate office before becoming a private residence again. In March, 2004 Guy and Jaynee Straw purchased the property to restore to its original grandeur as a Bed & Breakfast, currently known as Inn on the Main.
