This wonderful Colonial Revival home was built in 1920 for Douglass Woodruff, the owner of Auburn Button Works, and was designed with entertaining in mind. A tree-shaded veranda stretches the length of the back of the house and a secret garden at the back of the property was landscaped in the 1920's by a Cornell University student and still exists today. Spacious and inviting, the three rooms on the main floor that face the back yard, the sunroom, drawing room and dining room, all have French doors which open out onto the veranda. I imagine that Douglas & his wife rubbed elbows with the affluent of Auburn at many a garden party. In 1958 the home was sold to Frances & Carl DeFurio. Carl was 43 years old and owned and operated Eagle Tobacco Company in Syracuse. In May of 1961 Carl suddenly passed away. Frances, a high school math & science teacher, continued to live in the house with their two children for 9 years. To help make ends meet she boarded single teachers in the extra bedrooms. In 1968 a young doctor, Patrick Buttarazzi and his wife Alice, purchased the property and over the course of the 35 years that they lived in the home raised 14 children here. In September of 2004 Kathryn Hess purchased the residence from the Buttarazzis and spent a year renovating and re-decorating the stately home into an elegant & unique bed & breakfast which opened its doors for business one year later in 2005. In 2006, after a very successful first year, Katie decided to pursue other interests and put the bed & breakfast up for sale.

Mother's Day weekend 2007 my husband Rodney and I visited the Finger Lakes for the first time and were stunned by the beauty of the region as we drove through each town and along the clear lakes and were amazed at the variety of things to see and do, everything from the fantastic old architecture of the picturesque towns dotting the rolling hillsides, to the many historical sites, parks and lakes. We had set up appointments to see five inns in the area that weekend that were for sale.  We stayed overnight at two of the inns, 10 Fitch being one of them, and fell in love the moment we walked in the door. The next morning we met with our realtor and submitted an offer.

In September 2007 we finalized the purchase of the property & business and along with my mom Sally, who sold her home to come and live with us and help me run the inn, began our lives as innkeepers, marketing the inn as a romantic, quiet escape exclusively for adults.  In July 2009 10 Fitch was one of fourteen inns nation wide to receive the iLoveInns.com Traveler's Choice for Romance Award.

Rodney & I have quarters on the third floor of the inn and share that space with our longhaired Chihuahua Micro. We have two grown sons, Raith & Ryan who live a few hours away, and two precious granddaughters, Raythy who is 6 and Jenna who is 5 months old on Oct 9, 09. Mom has her own 2-bedroom apartment right next door and has had company often since she moved in this past spring. She also does all of the baking here at 10 Fitch and her chocolate chip cookies are becoming famous, even our guests are reviewing them on Trip Advisor!

  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Cheryl Barber for sharing her own secrets with BBOnline.com!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

    Romantic getaway

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

According to what our guests have said in reviews and in our guest room diaries, we are best known for romance, moms chocolate chip cookies, attention to detail, and our breakfasts. According to Trip Advisor, there are currently 328 B&Bs in the Finger Lakes. What makes us unique? We are a quiet, adults only property featuring three guest suites, each with private bathroom, bedroom and living/sitting room and we have many romantic add ons and packages to enhance our guests experience. What I love most about our inn is that couples come to reconnect, rekindle the romance and build their relationship and we are a part of the special memories that they create while they are here.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

Can I have two #1 reasons to visit Auburn? The surrounding area in general is breathtakingly beautiful with all the lakes, waterfalls, rolling hills, vineyards and outdoor things see and do. Auburn is “History’s Hometown”, the birthplace of talking movies, and has many historical and cultural sites to enjoy, including the William Seward Home, Willard Memorial Chapel, the Case research lab and museum, the Harriet Tubman Home, Merry Go Round Playhouse and much more.

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

When guests tell us they loved their stay and then they tell everyone they know about us that is the best compliment.

“Five star food, cleanliness, service, quality and attention to detail. We have stayed at other B and B's but Laurel Lodge is definitely many steps above the rest. It felt more like a miniature five star hotel. Bed was super comfortable and clean, breakfast way beyond expectations. Would not hesitate to return!”

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

When you are in our amazing backyard gardens you don’t feel like you are in the middle of the city.

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

Drive around the lakes and stop at some wineries and farm stands or better yet, let us set up a chauffeured winery/sightseeing tour for you so you can enjoy the scenery & sip some wine with no worries, shop at Mackenzie Childs in Aurora, let us set you up wit a hot air balloon ride during your stay and float over the Finger Lakes in style, visit William Seward House, take in a play at Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Visit and go hiking at Watkins Glen, Buttermilk Falls, Fillmore Glen or Taughannock Falls, we can even pack you a picnic lunch to take along or you can come back to 10 Fitch and enjoy a romantic dinner picnic in your room or out in the gazebo by the Koi pond, go explore charming Skaneateles Village, visit some antique shops, take a class and enjoy dinner at the NY wine & Culinary Center, enjoy a couples massage right in the privacy of your suite at 10 Fitch, sit on the veranda in the backyard and read a book or watch the fish swim in the ponds, take a trip to the Corning Museum of glass.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

Oh yes! Fitch Ave is just off historic South Street and within a mile of 10 Fitch you can walk to William H. Seward Home and take a tour of the home/museum or head out in the opposite direction to se the Harriet Tubman home. We are about a half mile from downtown Auburn where you can also enjoy a variety of productions at Auburn Public Theatre, dine at many restaurants and pubs, and enjoy shopping.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

There are so many great places to eat and food to enjoy in the area it is really hard to choose one but we have put together a list of our top picks on our website.

Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?

    www.fingerlakes.org

How many rooms does your inn have?

We have three 3-room guest suites.

    Do you accept pets?

We have our own little long haired Chihuahua who does not like sharing his space with other animals. We can suggest boarding pets at Windsong Farms Pet Boarding Kennels in Auburn.

  • Common Areas

    Living Room

The formal living room has been furnished with an array of antiques and modern decor. Lush silk draperies, needlepoint rugs, original artwork, and designer fabrics have been combined with whimsical and fun MacKenzie-Childs furnishings to create an elegant, yet comfortable, setting. The perfect place to sit and chat while enjoying a steaming mug of cocoa & Sally's chocolate chip cookies in front of the cozy fireplace or a glass of raspberry iced tea & cookies while playing checkers, chess, or backgammon at the game table. Facing the back yard, windows and French doors bank one wall of the room allowing warm afternoon light to softly bathe the room.  Relaxing, cozy, peaceful.

    Sunroom

Our sunroom is flooded with light from the many windows and the French doors that open onto the veranda and overlook the gardens. Hand painted with a whimsical garden theme, the huge mirror on the opposite wall is a wonderful, light-reflecting accent in the room. A jigsaw puzzle is always being worked on at the garden table in front of the windows where a bench and chair invite you to sit a while and add a piece or two. It's a great spot to enjoy a first cup of coffee in the morning.  You will also find an antique cabinet in the corner, which holds gift items that you might like to take home with you including our handmade olive oil soap, mugs with our logo, our wonderful spa sheets & robes, and much more. Bright, charming, fun.

    Formal Dining Room

The dining room at 10 Fitch is a place of beauty & tranquility with brilliantly lined walls dressed in period Thibaut wallpaper. Wonderful, warm light floods this room through windows and French doors overlooking the outside oasis of our back yard & gardens, where the waterfall splashes into the Koi pond and the happy sound of song birds perching in the trees blends with the whisper of the breeze in a natural outdoor symphony.  Weather permitting, and with advance notice, you may choose to dine outside on the veranda or deck.  In winter, when snow drapes the gardens in a glittering blanket of white, the crackling fire in the fireplace keeps everyone warm & cozy. Soft, instrumental music is always playing, and because we love beautiful things here at 10 Fitch you can expect breakfast to be a feast for your eyes as well as your taste buds starting with the table!  Our antique mahogany dining table is set each morning to delight and surprise with a mix of modern, antique, & MacKenzie-Childs table ware. Every morning during your stay at 10 Fitch it will be different. Cheerful, elegant, beautiful.

    Library

Tucked away in a corner of the house, our library is one of the coziest rooms at 10 Fitch. Rich wood paneled bookcase walls filled with antique books and other treasures beckon you to come in and settle into the oversized leather armchair next to the fireplace or stretch out on the comfy sofa. Parlor games are hidden away in a cabinet here for you to enjoy.  There is also a television discreetly tucked away on a shelf, just in case you might like to catch the news or check the score of the game while on the main floor of the inn. Warm, comfortable, inviting.

  • Gardens

We invite you to come and explore our back yard and gardens here at 10 Fitch, which is beautiful in every season.

The Secret Garden at the back of the property was landscaped by a Cornell University student in the 1920s and is a favorite spot for deer and our two resident ground hogs, Chubby & Chunky. Stretching the length of the house and facing the Secret Garden, our veranda & deck overlook the Koi pond and are the perfect place for breakfast on warm summer mornings or to just sit and relax any time of day.

In the spring, fall, and on cooler summer nights the fire pit in the center of the veranda is often lit and is a great spot to gather and socialize over a glass of wine or mug of hot cocoa.

"I stayed at the 10 Fitch for two nights in the English Suite and it was absolutely perfect. It was romantic, private, and only ~15 min from Skaneateles. They have lots of great options to add to your stay that really make it special and they are very detail-oriented. We had breakfast in our room each morning and it was incredibly delicious. I proposed to my girlfriend that weekend and she said she couldn't imagine it any better. We're planning to stay there for our wedding night as well. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice getaway."

"From the cozy suite with heavenly sheets to the scrumptious breakfast the next morning...amazing!"

"My husband and I saw pictures on the internet website and decided to book this lovely inn. We were not disappointed. In fact the accommodations were more than we expected. We booked the English Suite and it was superb. The four-poster king size bed is beyond belief! How nice to have a small porch off the bedroom to sit and listen to the fountain below and survey the beautiful grounds. The bathroom is also amazing. What a treat it was to be in the open shower each morning. The small sitting room in the suite was cozy and a nice retreat at the end of a day of sightseeing to watch a little TV. The owners were warm and welcoming and provided a wonderful gourmet breakfast each morning. There were little extras as well - beverages in the fridge and treat baskets throughout the house for sampling. We would not hesitate to visit this inn again and we hope that in the future we will be able to do just that!"

"10 Fitch was above and beyond any expectations that I had about a bed and breakfast. I joined six of my friends for a 'Spoiled Girls Weekend'. The accommodations were impeccable, the dining experience was divine and the area's attractions were enlightening. Absolutely fabulous weekend."

"The inn provided the perfect backdrop to our engagement story. We were utterly pampered by breakfast and massages in our beautiful suite. Cheryl and Sally were wonderful hosts, and the day after we got engaged, prepared us a very special breakfast. They thought of everything from maps to the local wineries to menus of romantic restaurants (one of which was the site of his proposal!) We felt like royalty, but also like family. We can't wait to return!"
