  • Introduction

Built in 1905 by the Justice of the Peace and a founding family of Stanhope, The Whistling Swan Inn is a Queen Anne Victorian home restored to its original splendor and turned into a bed and breakfast inn in 1985. Since that time it has has three major renovation segments. Today, it has 9 individually decorated guest rooms with well appointed, modern conveniences for the mid-week business guest and exquisite luxury for the leisure guest.

Known for its comfort and hospitality, the inn is conveniently located near several corporate centers. The small rural town of Stanhope is perfectly located for those seeking rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. Year-round activities include: museums, restaurants, antiquing, hiking, horseback riding, minor league baseball, skiing, ice fishing, many winter sports, outlet shopping, beautiful drives in northwestern New Jersey and much, much more.

    Dining Room

Located 45 miles west of New York City and 1 mile north of Interstate 80 just off of Route 206, we are centrally located and have access to public transportation.

A full hot country buffet breakfast is served in our elegant dining room and includes: two entrees, fruit, cereal, toast, juice and hot coffee or tea and a variety of homemade sweetbreads. In the warm weather, enjoy that second cup of coffee on the veranda. For the business guest with an early meeting, we can even fix breakfast to go.

  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Tom and Rosalind Bruno for sharing their own secrets with BBOnline.com!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

Travelers come to the Inn for a variety of reasons, but I think most come for a romantic getaway in a place where they can forget their responsibilities for one night.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

We are best known for the peace and quiet of the country. What I love most about my Inn is the covered wraparound veranda, which is typical of the Victorian era architectural style. Guests can relax with morning coffee or an evening glass of wine, and it's the perfect site for events.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

The area is great for outdoor activities and there are so many reasons to come, but the best hiking and biking trails in the state of New Jersey are located at our doorstep.

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

The best compliment I ever received about the Inn is that there is an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality without intrusion. It's a balance I work diligently to maintain.

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

The best kept secret in the area is Waterloo Village, which is an original canal town along the Morris Canal. It is an important part of NJ history and a beautiful place for quiet meditation or a romantic stroll.

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

A traveler staying for 4 nights should definitely try horseback riding along the Paulinskill Trail, spending a day at George Washington's headquarters in historic Morristown, listening to some great blues at the Stanhope House and antiquing in Chester.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

Yes. The Stanhope House, a famous blues club, is a five minute walk from the Inn. A very fine restaurant and antique shop are also within walking distance.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

Although there are many fine eateries in the area, my particular favorite is the Black Forest Inn, a family-owned restaurant that has been serving fine German cuisine for 40 years.

Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?

The best guides are www.njskylands.com/evcurrent and www.funnj.com

How many rooms does your inn have?

We have nine - Five beautifully appointed guest rooms and 4 luxurious suites.

    Do you accept pets?

Unfortunately, we are not pet friendly.
