Cape May County Wetlands Institute "Adopt a Terrapin" Project 30 May 2012, 6:00 am

For those of you who are very interested in preserving our eco-system, the Wetlands Institute is promoting the “ADOPT A TERRAPIN” Project.

Diamondback terrapins are relatively small, harmless turtles that live in salt marshes along the Atlantic coastline. The loss of population may result in negative impacts to the salt marsh ecology.  Nowadays, the only nesting habitat available to female terrapins along the Atlantic coast of New Jersey is the embankments of roads crossing and adjacent to coastal salt marshes. Locally, many hundreds of adult female terrapins are maimed or die each year during the nesting season (normally late May through mid-July) while attempting to cross roads in search of suitable nesting habitat.  Additionally, terrapins die each year by drowning in commercial crab traps.

Come and visit the Wetlands Institute to find out about this project as well as all the other wonderful work they are doing to preserve our ecology.

Kite Festival in WIldwood, NJ 21 May 2012, 6:47 am

A favorite of mine is the Kite Festival scheduled over Memorial Day Weekend in WIldwood, NJ.  Just imagine the sky over the beach filled with brightly colored kites.  It is truly a site to see.  Lay back in the sand and watch them dance and soar overhead.  So many shapes and styles to see.

The weekend will be filled with lots of events in addition to the kite festival.  The Celebration of Heroes and the State Gymnastics Championship will have events throughout the weekend.  So much to do, you will have to make some tough choices.

The Candlelight Inn is Helping to Clean the World 27 Feb 2012, 1:19 pm

As part of our mission to provide quality service and a great experience at the Candlelight Inn, we have kept ourselves involved in continuous education through our industry.  The Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII), holds a national conference each year.  The event involves educational sessions and a terrific vendor show.  For innkeepers, it is like being a kid in a toy store.

A couple of years ago, while walking through the vendor show, I came upon Clean the World.  They were looking to sign up B&Bs in their program that takes used soap, sterilizes it and sends it to people in poor, war-torn, or disaster-torn areas of the world.  Their mission is simple:
"Our goal is mighty, but our solution is simple — save the millions of lives lost each year to acute lower-respiratory infection and diarrheal illness by distributing recycled soap and promoting proper personal hygiene practices".
To support this effort, we take those toiletries that guests would traditionally throw away and we send them to Clean the World to re-use.  We provide signage in our bathrooms that ask tell our guests:

We are participating in the “Clean the World” toiletry recycling program.  We ask that you do not throw unused portions of soap, shampoo or conditioner in the trash.  Thank you for helping in our efforts to “Clean the World.”

Recently, I was asked to participate in a radio program, DIY World Improvement, that was discussing the Clean the World Program.  It was a great opportunity to contribute to an effort that is simple but can help so many in the world.  If you have time, please listen and learn more about this wonderful effort.

Gia's New Wildwood Location 18 Feb 2012, 2:41 pm

On a drive around town after vacation, I was surprised to see the sign for Gia's in a new location.  A favorite of many of our guests, Gia's was just a short walk away and one of the few remaining BYOB restaurants in the area.  I guess you could say that I was concerned or, maybe even disappointed.  Knowing that change can be a good thing, we went there for dinner to see what was up with the new location.

We were greeted by Beth and immediately impressed with the decor and ambiance.  We decided to check out the bar and had terrific drinks provided by Joey, the bartender.  Anyone who can make a good cold martini and cosmo, is a bartender that we like.  The drinks were great so we were off to a good start.  We also talked with them about the under $20 wine list that Vince (the owner) promised me was part of their new location.  This wine list was selected by a local sommelier from the Washington Inn.  The list was good and we felt that those who wanted to keep their bill at a more modest level would be pleased with the selections.

We then went to our table where Lou was our server.  He was friendly, knowledgeable, and very eager to make our first visit to the new Gia's great.  The menu is the same and the food is as delicious as it was at their previous location.  We started with their Spring salad, which is a favorite of mine.  Bill ordered Chicken Chiarella and I had the Chicken Cutlet dish.  We topped dinner off with a tasty Tiramisu.

So, while it a little further from the Inn, everything else makes the change worth checking out.  We hope you will consider Gia's for one of your visits to the Candlelight Inn.

Gia's new location:  3800 Pacific Avenue  -  609/729-5959.
