Return at dusk to this charming Keene, NH inn to enjoy a superb dinner in the romantic candlelit dining room.
The Chesterfield Inn is situated on a hill with a winding driveway leading around the pond from the entrance on Cross Road. The pond is edged with cattails and willow trees and has some very plump green frogs in its waters. On a summer night, the frogs provide a joyous chorus from the banks of the pond.
This lovely Brattleboro bed and breakfast is situated on 10 picturesque acres of land, mostly landscaped into gardens and designed by renowned landscape architect Gordon Hayward. Over the years this beautiful landscaping has created scenery that ties the gardens to the buildings in a natural way, providing the inn's intimacy to nature and its tranquil, restful setting.
The meadow is a striking mass of wild flowers. In midsummer, the grasses and flowers of this bed and breakfast in New Hampshire grow to be waist high and sway beautifully in the breeze. There is a trimmed path through the meadow providing an excellent opportunity to explore and enjoy the summertime smells of various flowers and grasses. Black-eyed Susan's and Queen Anne's lace flourish there..
The main inn overlooks the property, while the Johanna Wetherby Building and the additional exterior rooms are set across the knoll. The buildings are shaped similarly to that of old New England farmhouses, in that they were attached to the barns so that the farmer could avoid wading through snow to get to his animals in the cold white winters.
With gardens on all four sides, the bluestone terrace offers a romantic setting for drinks or dining in the warmer months. This lovely terrace leads down steps to the level lawn area where many delightful weddings have taken place. In springtime, the azalea and crab apple blossoms are breathtaking. In winter, those same trees are hung with sparkling white lights that twinkle as the snow blows.
Chesterfield Inn is also home to one of the most romantic NH restaurants. From the hearty country breakfast served every morning, to the sumptuous dinner served at night, food is an important part of the warm hospitality that is offered at this lovely New Hampshire inn and restaurant. The parlor, dining rooms, and terrace have exceptional views of the back meadow and the rolling hills beyond. The terrace, surrounded by perennial gardens and crab apple trees, is a wonderful place to enjoy a glass of wine before dinner.
