  • Insider Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Cynthia Cobb for sharing her own secrets with!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

We are in the center of New England and an ideal place for touring the region. We are also just 90 minutes from Boston and many couples come here for a romantic getaway, skiing, visiting colleges and prep schools, hiking, biking and other outdoor adventure.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

Attentive service and tranquil environment. We have a restaurant with the Wine Spectator award and we are known for wonderful dining and wines. Our dining rooms overlook antique barns, bird feeders and lush perennial gardens. The inn was originally built in 1797 as Bartlett Tavern and has a long history of welcoming travelers. We love the historical nature of the inn (wide board original flooring etc.).

We are also well known for Cooking Confidential, An Evening with the Chef cooking classes (January through April). We also sit on the Currier and Ives Byway and New England College is in our town. Henniker is the ONLY Henniker on Earth (this is the town’s slogan) but there is no other town in the world with this name.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

Quintessential and authentic New England. Antique barns, gorgeous covered bridge and arched granite bridge over the Contoocook River in town. Interesting shops (antiques, quilting, yarn & felting, antique, used and rare books) and historical sites such as the nearby Fells Museum and Canterbury Shaker Village. New England College providing interesting art, theater, cultural and political events.

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

You make us feel so welcome and provide the perfect environment for us to relax and rejuvenate. Amazing food!

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

How easy and close we are to Boston. There is only one stop sign between Boston and the Colby Hill Inn! 90 minutes door to door, but a world away. We sit on the Currier and Ives Byway.

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

Visit the Canterbury Shaker Village for a step back in “Shaker Time”, interesting classes, dining and history; visit the Old Number 6 Bookstore with antique, rare as well as thousands of other books (great cookbooks) all at great prices. Take a tour of the Henniker Brewery microbrewery and enjoy their tasting room for some of their hand-crafted ales. Visit the Fells Historic Estate and Gardens a beautiful summer estate listed on the Historical register. Tours of the 22 room estate and 84 conserved acres. A visit to the Mt. Sunapee Adventure Park for Zip Lining or mini golf then on to Lake Sunapee for a cruise on this beautiful lake. Fly fishing on the Contoocook River is a highlight. If during the winter there is skiing and tubing at Pats Peak and Mt. Sunapee as well.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

The Contoock River, The covered bridge, New England College, Quilted Threads and the Henniker Brewery.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

The Colby Hill Inn restaurant on our premises serves dinner nightly (closed on Mondays Dec – April). We’ve been voted Best Gourmet Getaway by Yankee Magazine and featured in multiple magazines for our dinners. Nearby we like a traditional clam shack kind of a place called High Tide in Hillsborough. Great clams, shrimp, burgers and ice cream. Fun for a casual lunch or dinner.

Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?

How many rooms does your inn have?

14 including two luxury pool side suites.

    Do you accept pets?

We don’t accept pets, but a wonderful place in our town cares for them while our guests are visiting. A Precious Pet Resort.
