Named for the Ottawa Indians who inhabited the area's forests, the County was established in 1837 when Michigan became a state. Fur trader Rix Robinson established the first permanent settlement in 1833 at the mouth of the Grand River; this fur trader post soon grew into the present day city of Grand Haven.

Ottawa County's location on Lake Michigan shoreline has long made it a vacation destination. From those early resorts of the Victorian Age. The County has continued to provide a rich variety of recreational opportunities - camping, hiking, fishing, biking, cross country skiing, boating, swimming, and so much more.

The Pigeon Creek Inn is located adjacent to Ottawa County's newest Park "The Pigeon River Greenway". Built along 1.5 miles of the Pigeon River, there are 6 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, a number of bridges and scenic overlooks, and a water trail for canoeists and kayakers.
