Saugatuck Art Gallery, Michigan bed and breakfast shopping 25 Sep 2012, 12:45 pm
Saugatuck Gallery
If you are out looking for some art for your home or second home, the Saugatuck Gallery is a cool place to stop while in staying at our Michigan Bed and Breakfast. They have alot of different types of art, all in pastels, and oils, that are priced very reasonably, in frame or just on canvas. Do not let the red signs fool you, as many people including myself read it as "going out of business", they are "Going our for business". I cannot tell you how many times I missread their sign.. :-}.

Saugatuck is just 20 minutes away and a short dirve through orchard and winery country. Be sure to check out our other Blogs on some other ideas on fun things to do, places to see, and fine dining restaurants.

DeLano Mansion Double Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 cup softened margarine
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup sugar
1 pkg instant vanilla pudding mix
2 eggs
Mix well using hand mixer.
Add.
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/4 cups flour
1tsp baking soda
1 cup milk chocolate chips
1 cup white chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups pecans
mix till the flour is fully blended in.
Place 1 1/2 balls of doughr on sheet, flatten them with your hand to 1/2 inch thick, slightly moisten you hand prior to doing this as I find the dough does not stick to you hands that way.
Bake at 350 for 13 minutes in convection, or 16 minutes non-convection oven, till golden brown. Remove from oven and place cookies on wire rack to cool for 5 minutes, then place into cookie jar, or if the need comes on, eat them warm....I call that quality control..
Great food and a romantic getaway in Michigan can be found at the DeLano Mansion Inn. Located just a short drive from Holland and Saugatuck Michigan, we are in the heart of the Michigan Winery area, and a short drive from the beach and many other draws for the Southwest Michigan area.

Michigan Bed and Breakfast recipes, Black Current Crepes 20 Mar 2012, 1:45 pm
One of the most raved over dishes that we serve here at the inn in our "Crepes de Cassis" or translated from the French, Black Current Crepes. We do not serve this often, but when we do, it is always a huge hit, and so many people commented on how good they also looked the last time I posted a picture of it online, I have decided to post the recipe for everyone to make at home. Great breakfasts are just one of the things that people enjoy during their Michigan Getaway.
I will be posting more recipes as time goes on, in lieu of a cookbook, which so many people have also asked about...so enjoy!!!
DeLano Mansion Crepes de Cassis
(Black Current Crepes)
Soften 1-8 oz. package of cream cheese with 1/2 cup black current jam in oven at 170 F., for about 30 minutes, also at this time place an 8x8 Pyrex pan to warm in oven.
Add in order in blender:
1 egg
1 1/2 cup milk
1 cup all purpose flour
2 tsp blackberry brandy
1 tsp olive oil
1 pinch of salt
Blend well and let sit for 5 minutes.
Heat electric griddle or skillet to 325, and spray with vegetable oil or butter lightly, pour batter into 5" circles and then rotate pan slightly to spread batter a little bit till around 6 or 7 inches in diameter. Cook till slightly golden brown on each side. Once cooked place in a warmed 8x8 pan, and cover with foil. Use all batter and store in the warmed pan covered.
Once finished, fold the cream cheese/jam gently, till a nice consistency, and spread over crepe, nearly to the edge. Roll crepe starting from one side towards the other, do this several times, and serve on a plate, dust lightly with powdered sugar, and place a dollop of the cream cheese/jam mixture over the crepe, you can garnish with fresh blackberries as well.
Note: the crepes non filled can be made ahead of time, and will store in the fridge well, but can also be frozen, with was paper in between. Be sure to remove the wax paper before heating!

Veldheers Tulip Gardens and De Klomp delftware 24 Feb 2012, 4:51 am
Veldheers Tulip Gardens and De Klomp delft factory
For some very traditional Holland Michigan sightseeing, no visit is complete without a stop here, especially when the tulip gardens are in full bloom. When you visit the farm not only will you see five million tulips in bloom, but 50,000 daffodils, 10,000 hyacinths and 20,000 crocus all providing a continuous parade of color for the garden enthusiast.
The De Klomp Delft factory is also located at the same spot as Veldheers, and has a wonderfull selection of delftware, using the old methods, and they even import their dyes, and paints directly from the Netherlands, and hand paint each and every piece, and you can watch them work, which is pretty neat, I talked to one person there, who talked about how they pour the porcelain, which they buy from the Netherlands, and let dry in the mold, and then with their hard work transform into these beautiful works of art.

DeLano Mansion Inn Coffee Mugs 22 Feb 2012, 4:16 am
DeLano Mansion Coffee Mugs.
If you have one of our mugs already, let us know how it is holding up, and any feedback, we'd love to hear back about how you like our mugs!!.
I have had allot of outstanding comments from our guests, and even have had former guests say they get allot of great comments on them from friends and family.
They are $18.00 plus tax, and are microwave and dishwasher, safe, and are pretty indestructible, I have dropped mine, and everything else, and still it looks perfect. It holds the heat really well, and it really easy to grip, and frankly, I love the tankard style, it's hard to knock over.

Apple Walnut Bread, Michigan Bed and Breakfast Recipe 20 Feb 2012, 2:49 pm
DeLano Mansion Apple Walnut Bread
Our always requested recipe for the best Apple Walnut Bread recipe, we bake this here at the Inn all of the time.
So many of you have asked for recipes, and now we are going to be posting them online for you to make at home, and this is one of the ones that we get the most raves about.
DeLano Mansion Apple Walnut Bread
302 Cutler St. Allegan, Mi 49010
269-686-0240
2 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
1 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Mix well using mixer, then add:
2 cups flour
1tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon.
mix until mixed well.
Then add.
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
2 granny smith apples, rough cut(I prefer them that way)
I mix them using the hand mixer on low just to distribute them evenly, Do Not over mix, this will mash the apples.
Pour into a 9x13 pan that has been sprayed with oil, and then bake at 350 for 29 minutes, (5 minutes longer if not using convection), let stand overnight once done, I will let it cool for some time, and cover only after a minimum of 4 hours, usually I do not cover it until the next day.
I love to serve this with ice cream, and maybe some warmed caramel drizzle, or just on its own, as many of you have eaten it this way while staying at our Michigan Inn.
While staying here at the DeLano Mansion. please consider adding on one of our all inclusive romantic Michigan spa packages, or maybe one of our ala carte' items list on our website. We strive to make your romantic getaway in Michigan the best it can be, and it all continues on with our food.

Allegan Antique Market-treasure hunting 6 Jul 2011, 2:37 pm
Many times we get asked where do we find all of our antiques, and the Allegan Antiques Market is one of them. We have spent years hunting for that perfect treasure for the inn, and for our quarters, we have purchased such things as a coffee table, pedestal cake stands, silverware, china, yard art, tables, and a whole lot more. So if you are looking for that special antique something for your home we suggest that you visit the antique Allegan Antique Market. The show is the last Sunday of the month from April to September, and is just a short drive, or walk from our Michigan Bed and Breakfast.| Famous allegan "big chicken" |
| One of the 450 booths at the market. |
Whether you are looking for antique tools, furniture, knickknacks, collectibles, or even a boat or old car, I have seen it all at the market. One of the nice things is that you can do some old fashioned haggling with the dealers directly, which I find to be a little fun, you can also find some real treasures that are cheap compared to regular antique stores, and the like. We purchased a very large punch bowl, and cups which sit in our built in china cabinet in our side foyer for $125, a huge steal, and one of the things that I prize most..be sure to check it out when visiting the Mansion.

One must note: DOGS are no longer allowed at the Antiques Market.

Holland Michigan, Cranes Pie Pantry 6 Jul 2011, 1:21 pm
One of our must stop recommendations for the city of Holland, Michigan, is Cranes in the City. An offshoot of the original Cranes Orchards, located in Fennville, the city Cranes offers everything that the original offers, and then some. Opened In July of 2010, the "new" Cranes is a huge hit, and a favorite stop of ours, for just about anything, but is a favorite of mine for the desserts. I personally love their apple pie, and the neighbors treat me to a pie for leaf blowing their yards, and they wonder why I do not mind blowing their yards, and why I do such a good job of it ;)

Michigan Inn pictures, Hamilton Wooden Trestle Bridge. 16 Apr 2011, 8:59 am
One of the most photographed spots in Allegan County has to be the wooden trestle bridge in Hamilton, Michigan. I took a few pictures during the spring flooding, but it is much more picturesque in the summer, fall and winter months. This bridge is old, I am not sure how old, but it has been around for some time now, and is still used to this day to deliver railroad cars to the Hamilton Farm Bureau yards.
If you love, old bridges, and love photography, the old trestle is a must stop while you are out and about. The bridge is easy to find, it is located right in downtown Hamilton, Michigan, on the right hand side of the road as you are driving from our Allegan Michigan Bed and Breakfast, on the way to Holland, Michigan on M40. There is a little park at the foot of the bridge that has picnic tables, and it is a great place to stop to a picnic, or just to relax for a moment and take in the sound of falling water over the dam. This location is also a popular place for locals to fish, or just to take a break from running around.
The dam at the foot of the bridge is a replacement of the original that dated to 1852, that dam gave way, and the current dam was built in 1855. A saw mill used the hydro power to mill lumber till the mid 1800's, some time after 1855 a flour mill was erected on the other side that operated until at least 1913 according to records. The mill structures are now gone, but most of the 2nd dam built there remains...for now, there has been talk about removing the dam to restore the river back to natural flows.
