The Historic Merrell Inn is one of New England's most historic inns, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the only inn to be found in the American Historic Buildings Survey. The building is also under a 500-year historic preservation covenant through the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. The inn was built more than two centuries ago around 1794 and built to last with brick walls that are 18 inches thick. It was a stagecoach stop during most of its early history and is still a welcome retreat to the weary traveler. Come and visit this special place and enjoy the coziness of one of the inn's ten original wood-burning fireplaces, sit by a crackling fire at breakfast in the original old Keeping Room with its huge cooking fireplace and beehive oven.

This beautiful brick stagecoach inn welcomes you today just as it has welcomed guests for over 200 years. Enjoy breakfast served in the original Tearoom. The Tavern Room, with its own great fireplace, invites you to sit in its copious wing chairs by a crackling fire or write a letter to a friend at the two hundred year old secretary desk.
The Pineapple is the symbol of welcome.
We welcome you to this rare architectural gem -
the only American Inn to be included in the
Historic American Buildings Survey.

In warmer weather relax in the inn's two acres of grounds and gardens which extend down to the banks of the Housatonic River - and find yourself agreeing with Mark Twain when he said, "There is no tonic like the Housatonic." Come and enjoy many of the inn's early and exquisite antiques, some of them dating back to the time that the inn was built. In the morning enjoy a hearty breakfast from the inn's menu which includes items such as blueberry pancakes and sausage, French toast, or one of the house's special omelets all served at your own table. Enjoy the special history of this place, but do so as a person who appreciates television and phones in the rooms. All private baths and central heat in winter (the fireplaces are for atmosphere) and room air conditioners in summer. If you are coming to New England, come here and stay in comfort in rare history.

This was my “first†B&B and I found it to be most enjoyable. It lived up to the reputation you hear about B&B’s. The room was inviting and being able to build a fire in the fireplace in the room made it special. Breakfast and the hospitality were perfect. Thank you! ~ Marsha, Florida, March 22, 2008
We had a great time, as usual, there this weekend. Lovely rooms, each decorated differently, with period-inspired furnishings. Comfortable, with friendly helpful hosts. Breakfast was delicious. A nice feeling to the pace all around. We've stayed there before and will stay again! Best regards, Deb & Joe, Bedford, MA, January 27, 2008
