English Hideaway Inn
Winchester, as well as a small town close by across the border into Connecticut, was also the ancient capital of early England. This was the home of King C’nute in AD 900 when he learnt that even a King was unable to halt the sea’s tide from rising; he got wet! One of the most acclaimed early Anglo Saxon Kings, King Alfred the Great, had his capital here in AD 1000, sixty years before William the Conqueror invaded and changed the course of English history turning the existing Saxon Church into one of the grandest Cathedrals in the land.
This generously sized room is located on the north side of the inn with an en suite shower room. The room is located on the second floor with views over Tom Ball Mountain with its romantic associations with the Mahican Indians.
The name has connotations locally as we are situated in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. What you may not know, Berkshire (pronounced Barkshire) is also a royal county of England. This is the country home of the British Royal Family who spend much of their time living in the timeless splendour of Windsor Castle.

The room takes its name after the close by town of the same name just across the border in Connecticut. This town also gained its name from the ancient city of Salisbury in England. This is close to the 8,000 year old ruins of Stonehenge, the Roman and early English fortification of Old Sarum which dates back to 500 BC but above all is home to the majestic Salisbury Cathedral. This has the tallest cathedral spire in England reaching as high as 400 feet.
