Who just stayed with us! 29 Apr 2015, 10:24 am

Many of our guests are here doing fascinating and important work.  Once in a while, we get to hear about it.  Earlier this week I was in my office by the breakfast area, with my door open and a lovely woman stopped to say Hello.  She told me Harvard had brought her here as part of a neurological study, and she simply wanted to tell me how much she and her husband had enjoyed their stay with us.  Jessica Cox is a motivational speaker with a focused yet joyful presence.  Her extraordinary achievements are told here:

I hope she gets to return to speak at Harvard, or anywhere else nearby.  Clearly this woman has much to tell us about reaching beyond what seem to be limitations….

I left my stuff! 15 Apr 2015, 7:27 am

Occasionally guests leave items behind and our staff is careful to identify them and often ship them to the home address we have on file.  This new site may make it easier for guests to let us know they think they left something with us and to be sure we will send it to the right place.  It can also be a place we can post items left in a common area.  Years and years ago, a video camera was left on our porch.  We tried to identify the guest to return it, and could not.  After six months we stopped trying.  This still seems sad to me, though there were no videos stored in the camera (which we looked at to try to identify the owner–).

We hope this is a way to improve the solution to this little problem of keeping track of our stuff, and yours!

What is the best swag? 27 May 2014, 6:14 am

We like to make it easy and fun for our guests to remember us and if they like us, pass along the good word of their stay.  Our little branded products include the usual mugs, pens, bookmarks, travel cups.  Some times we have had lovely lip balms and creams, we have ear plugs in sweet little travel cases.  And now I just got some flash drives made, 4gb.  The question is, how do I best get these out into the guest network?  The first batch will go to our commencement guests, arriving today.  But I would love to hear of creative ways to ensure they are used happily among appreciative travelers…..

Clean the World 6 Mar 2014, 1:55 pm

We just sent another box of slightly used soap bars to Clean the World for processing.  This organization takes our soap, along with soap from other donating hotels, and repurposes it for  giving to people who need it and cannot otherwise get soap for their daily hygiene.

In Cambridge, just blocks from our front door, Harvard Square has its own party: http://harvardsquare.com/Home/News/Come-Celebrate-New-Year-s-Eve-and-New-Year-s-Day-i.aspx

We still have some rooms open, make a night of it!

Give and take books in our neighborhood.

Around the corner from our house, a tiny sharing spot– (and Yes, that’s me taking the pic, reflected in the plexiglass door)

Our solar panels, in the blessed sunshine— 19 Oct 2012, 10:23 am

Making hot water for our guests!

We rarely get the opportunity to see our rooftop. The last time we got an image, from Google Earth, it was to determine the best use of our solar exposure, in 2008. Because of our urban location, it is hard to get a good image of all the panels now that they are in place.

A week or so ago, I got a random email from a solar installer trying to sell me on the idea of this alternative energy source. I responded that we have already been using our roof top for solar thermal cells. He sent me this image back, and for this I thank him, even though we won’t be using his services….
