  • Introduction

"Inn of the Month" - Country Living Magazine
Recognized by Food & Wine Magazine

Just over an hour north of Boston, The York Harbor Inn has offered a retreat from the rigors of metropolitan life for more than a century. Come experience it for yourself. This kind of hospitality was invented in Maine. Our expert staff is committed to providing personal attention, offering you elegance you can enjoy in your most comfortable clothes.

York is truly an ideal vacation destination in all seasons. Miles of sandy beaches are yours to explore. You can enjoy the popular Long Sands and Short Sands Beaches bustling with activity. Venture to the more secluded Cape Neddick Beach teeming with crabs, starfish and other coastal creatures. Or walk to the secluded and quiet Harbor Beach just steps from the York Harbor Inn.

    York Harbor Inn - Tradition

Little has changed since the Inn first opened its doors more than one hundred years ago. York Harbor has always been one of Maine's loveliest and least-crowded seaside resorts. Surrounded by oceanfront estates, the harbor escaped the commercialization that altered some of Maine's better-known resorts. Each of the many additions to the Inn's 300 year-old common room reflects something of its era. You can trace the Inn's history by strolling through its maze of corridors, a fascinating quilt of architectural styles.

    Lodging:

The York Harbor Inn is a 54 room Oceanfront Resort with five separate lodges for guests. Lodging accommodations range from simple but elegant Country Inn rooms to luxurious guest rooms with Jacuzzi spa tubs, fireplaces, ocean views, balconies and heated tile floors.

    Dining:

We have two dining options to satisfy all tastes and palettes. The 1637 dining room provides an oceanview dining experience, or our more casual Ship's Cellar Pub, which features the same great menu served in an atmosphere built to recreate the "down below" of a fine sailing vessel.

    Groups:

The York Harbor Inn is the perfect destination for groups. Whether you are looking to host your annual reunion, a Corporate Retreat, your company Holiday party, a Rehearsal dinner or your Wedding Reception. You will find the York Harbor Inn perfect for all of your groups needs.

  • Lodging

The York Harbor Inn family of Inns is comprised of six separate lodges. The MAIN INN offers 22 Guest rooms including several luxury units with ocean view decks, fireplaces and/or Jacuzzi spa tubs and is the centerpiece of our oceanfront resort. Our Bed & Breakfast style inns offer a complete Continental Breakfast provided by a resident innkeeper.

Just 20 feet from the Main Inn, in the YORKSHIRE HOUSE (sometimes referred to as "The Carriage House") we have 11 guest rooms, 6 of which have at least a partial ocean view. This building also contains our "3 Room Suite" which is one of our largest guest rooms and perfect for bridal parties.

Adjacent to the Yorkshire Building is our luxurious HARBOR HILL INN with seven luxury guest rooms. All Harbor Hill rooms include a king bed, a gas stove fireplace, spa tub (one does not, it has a handicap bath, no spa), heated tiled bathroom floor and full or partial ocean view.

On the other side of the Main Inn is the HARBOR CLIFFS INN. This building features elegant luxury rooms with a queen or king bed. Amenities range from standard to superior depending upon the room type. Many Harbor Cliffs rooms offer outstanding ocean views, fireplaces and/or Jacuzzi spas. Some rooms have private decks.

The 1730 Harbor Crest Inn is located on scenic Coastal Rte 1A, approximately one half-mile from the York Harbor Inn. This historic, stately colonial Inn has seven beautifully appointed luxury guest rooms all with private baths. The rooms have been carefully decorated to emphasize the special, historic nature of this building. Rooms feature various four-poster king size beds, fireplaces, wireless and direct internet connections and spacious bathrooms. Six of the seven rooms have two-person Jacuzzi spa tubs. The Inn also has private meeting rooms and is the perfect place for groups or families to "take over" the entire house for meetings, special occasions, or gatherings of any kind (please contact our sales office as certain restrictions and conditions may apply). Harbor Crest Inn is now Pet Friendly.

The Chapman Cottage is the York Habor Inn's newest property opening in August of 2012. Previously a bed and breakfast run by the Archibald Family, the Chapman Cottage is the sister house to our 1730 Harbor Crest Inn, and houses 7 luxury guest rooms with king beds, jacuzzi tubs, private decks, and some oversize baths with gas fireplaces. Complimentary wireless internet is also included. Enjoy a deluxe continental breakfast on the expansive front deck, or in our fireplaced common area, complete with handcrafted tiles fabricated by the Chapman houses' original owner Henry Mercer. This is our "concierge building" and our resident innkeeper is our Conceirge Paul Gagnon. Chat with him at breakfast and get tips and recommendations for all the wonderful adventures York and the Seacoast area have to offer.  The Chapman Cottage is the perfect place for a family retreat or corporate gathering. For details on renting the entire property, or perhaps both the Chapman Cottage and its sister property, The Harbor Crest Inn, right next door, please contact our director of sales Casey Syvertsen at casey@yorkharborinn.com

  • Dining

Dining at the York Harbor Inn is truly a special experience. Choose to dine upstairs in our "1637" Restaurant" with fantastic ocean views, historic, intimate dining rooms, and a lively Tavern Bar and Tap Room (often with live entertainment) all centered around a large fieldstone fireplace, or go "down below" to the SHIP'S CELLAR PUB. The Pub offers a "one of a kind" atmosphere with its décor and construction and LIVE ENTERTAINMENT on many nights. The very popular Pub is designed to replicate the extravagant "down-below" quarters of the large Newport sailing vessels that once graced the waters off the shores of Newport, RI.  A "brightwork" of mahogany, cherry, holly and teak surround you with warm, rich tones and fine details that are reminiscent of the great boatbuilding heritage of New England.

Our extensive MENU is served both upstairs and down and has been recognized by many publications including Food & Wine Magazine, Gourmet, Taste and Country Living. Menu items include creative New American Cuisine, Classical favorites, and an extensive offering of Bistro style preparations from simple to complex. Always featured on the menu is fresh native New England Seafood in traditional and creative preparations. Full bar service is offered in both restaurants as well as a large yet discriminating wine list.

  • Ship's Cellar Pub

The Ship’s Cellar Pub is a “must see” facet of the Inn. In recent years, the Pub has been transformed from its former livery stable atmosphere into a rare nautical experience.

Located in the lower level of the Inn, you’ll feel as though you are boarding a fine Newport Sailing Vessel, as you descend below deck into a multi-room tavern and lounge finished in a dazzling display of fine woodwork and joinery. Mahogany decking and shop lap boards create a rich, warm glow, while delicate in-lays of exotic woods and veneers celebrate the tradition of Maine’s wooden boat building reputation. Cozy, comfortable, leather cushioned “settees” create compartments and nooks for dining and lounging.

Open daily for lunch and dinner featuring an extensive MENU and discriminating wine list. The majority of our menu is now gluten free. All items marked with an asterisk are gluten free or can be modified to be gluten free.

Specially priced cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Monday through Friday. There is live entertainment five nights each week (Wednesdays through Sunday).

    Ship's Cellar Pub Hours:

    • Monday – Thursday 11:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m.
    • Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m. – 12:00 a.m. (Midnight)
    • Sunday – 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.

"Make a Night of It: The full yachty experience isn't complete without a pint at the Ship's Cellar Pub below the York Harbor Inn, where beadboard ceilings, exposed frames, and portholes will make you swear you're dining inside an elegant sailing yacht." - Downeast Magazine.

  • Area Information

    Sandy Beaches

    Long Sands Beach
Long Sands beach runs parallel to Coastal Route 1A and is approximately 2 miles long.  Sections of the beach are most popular for surfing and volleyball tournaments are often played in the sand. The best swimming is about the middle of the beach where public restrooms are also available. Metered parking is available along the side of the road. Long Sands Beach is only 1 mile from the Inn.

    Short Sands Beach
Short Sands Beach is a mile further north of Long Sands on Coastal Route 1A. This beach has a higher sand bar and therefore is better for sunbathing at high tide than Long Sands. Enjoy watching salt water taffy being made the old fashioned way at theGoldenrod or play some arcade games at the Fun-O-Rama. York Beach is a traditional New England beach town and is filled with family activities including many gift shops, restaurants, an arcade, and bowling. Also located in the heart of York Beach is York's Wild Kingdom and Amusement Park complete with a full zoo, a petting arena, amusement rides and more. Numerous sidewalk shops and places to eat are also located in the park. Call 1-207-363-4911 for seasonal hours and more information.

    York Harbor Beach
York Harbor Beach is directly across the street from the York Harbor Inn (pictured top and right). Known as the ‘locals’ beach, it often is full of children riding the waves and families picnicking in the sand. This is a more secluded beach that is close by and great for tide pooling. Although there is permit parking only on the access road during the summer, don’t worry, if you’re staying at the Inn your only a 3-minute walk away!

    Cape Neddick Beach
Cape Neddick Beach is located on the Shore Road headed into Ogunquit, Maine. Like York Harbor Beach, it is a secluded beach that is great for tide pooling. Limited permit parking only is allowed along the roadside from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

    Lighthouses and Waterfront Attractions

    The Nubble Lighthouse
York, Maine. If you take a left as you leave the Inn, the Nubble Lighthouse is located three miles northeast. The Nubble Light is located just north of Long Sands Beach. This beautiful landmark is an active lighthouse and is located on a small rocky island at the end of the point. This famous and well-photographed lighthouse resides on a rocky outcrop of a small island. The annual "Lighting of the Nubble" always takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Sohier Park, York Beach, Maine 03910.

    The Goldenrod
The Goldenrod is located in the heart of Short Sands Beach on Railroad Avenue. The Goldenrod has been making traditional salt water taffy since 1896 – an oceanside treat for all ages. Taffy is made in full view of spectators and it is quite an educational experience to watch. As the bubbling mass of ingredients is cooled, pulled, twisted, cut, and wrapped before your eyes, the sweet aroma of melting sugar cane fills the air. The impeccably clean machinery is displayed for all to admire. It's a very interesting process to watch. Of course, the kisses are also a nice treat to take home. Call 207-363-2621 for seasonal hours and more information.

Boon Island Lighthouse, York Harbor, ME. – Boon Island Light is six miles offshore and visible in clear weather from Harbor Beach. Erected in 1811 on a barren rock island, the 132 foot lighthouse operates today, as in the past, as a continual beacon to sailors. It can be seen up to 21 miles at sea.

A story of a happening on this island is told in the novel Boon Island by Kenneth Roberts, 1956. Fact, and legend perhaps, has it that in December 1710, the Galley Nottingham wrecked on the island. Twelve of the crew of fourteen survived the wreck. After 20 days the ships carpenter died, his bones were stripped of their "beef" and the fat from the kidney was used to soothe frostbitten feet. After 24 days, a passing vessel discovered the shipwrecked survivors and brought them to shore.

    Perkins Cove
Perkins Cove is located 12 miles north of the Inn just off Route 1A. You can take a nice drive up the scenic Shore Road and venture to Perkins Cove in Ogunquit. Once in Perkins Cove, take a walk on the Marginal Way, a mile and half footpath along the rocky coast, window shop in the unique stores or hop on one of the excursion cruises aboard the Finest Kind boat charters. It's a wonderful mix of shops, restaurants, art galleries and touring boats.

Fort Foster - Pocahontas Road Kittery Point, Maine
Beautiful hidden beaches, picnic areas and restrooms. Explore the remains of Fort Foster's bunkers built in 1872. There is a small admission fee. Open seasonally from dawn to dusk. Phone: 207-439-2182
