Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Mark Stephens for sharing his own secrets with BBOnline.com! Why do most travelers stay at your inn?
The geographic location of Dexter: right in the center of Maine. Drop your bags at your home from home and relax at the incredibly comfy Brewster Inn, where everywhere is a day trip. I'm a 4 season destination, there is always something to do in my part of Maine, and I excel at helping my guests out with good information either before they arrive or once they are here.
What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?
The Brewster Inn is on the National Register and is the home of former State Governor, Congressman and Senator in Washington Ralph Owen Brewster. He was also portrayed by Alan Alda in the Oscar winning film, The Aviator, which co-starred Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes. Many interesting people have stayed here, including Louis B Mayer founder of MGM Films and Presidents Taft and Truman. I also had it on HGTV 4 years ago.
What do I love most about the Inn? It’s got a heart.
If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?
It is a 4 season destination where anything is possible: hiking, bird-watching, antiquing, moose-watching, ATV's, snowmobiles, skiing, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, snowboarding and tubing, dog sledding, scenic drives, fishing, ice fishing, white water rafting, kayaking, etc... You name it; I can find it for you.
What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?
Putting it back together again and making it the impressive building it used to be. It needed a lot of work and guests that come back every year or 2 years see the changes. The reviews that guests write also make it wonderful doing what I do. It makes it all worthwhile.
What’s the best kept secret about the area?
The natural beauty of this part of Maine known as the "The Maine Highlands" or as I like to call it "The Gateway to the Moosehead Lake and Mt. Katahdin region of Maine”. Some of the most beautiful scenery around.
If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?
Four nights usually means 3 full day’s activities, so I’d suggest a driving tour on Route 1 taking in Belfast, Camden, Rockland and Rockport, lighthouses along the way as well as in Prospect, the big new "Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory" over the Penobscot river that has an observatory on the top as well as Fort Knox that’s right next to it; that is one of the best preserved fortifications on the New England seacoast and possibly a trip to a great local Maine winery and brewery on the way back.
Day 2: Moosehead Lake, Katahdin Iron Works, Mt Katahdin Gulf Hagas and the start of the Appalachian Trail that would actually take you to GA where you can hike and see amazing scenery.
Day 3: Moose watching tour and white water rafting for a great last day out or add a couples massage at a wonderful massage facility right here in town after the Moose watching or rafting.
Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?
Dexter Historical Society and Museum, Stressless massage, Dexter Main Street with small shops and a big supermarket. We even have a great gym close by that I have passes for.
What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?
Vittles in Pittsfield Maine: an amazing restaurant that really does look after my guests incredibly well. All my guests love that restaurant.
Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?
The Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau website, http://www.visitbangormaine.com/.
My website will have an excellent concierge section added soon at www.brewsterinn.com AND I always suggest that guests call me so I can talk to them about their requirements and then I can direct them to exactly the information they need quickly and easily.
How many rooms does your inn have?
Do you accept pets?
Yes, I can accept pets with prior notice in 2 rooms here and there’s also a wonderful doggie day car and lodging at http://freshairdogs.com/.
