Old Owl TAVERN
Read More
The Old Owl Tavern opened in 2004 and soon became Harrodsburg's favorite "bar and grill" restaurant, serving fine wines, spirits & draft beer. Join us on Monday-Thursday 4-9 p.m., Friday 4-10 p.m., and Saturday 11:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m.
The Old Owl TAVERN is named for the Dedman family’s Kentucky Owl Bourbon Whiskey distilled along the Kentucky River prior to Prohibition. This southern wing, ground floor area originally provided housing for the horse carriages transporting the young ladies to this prestigious girls’ school.
Dirt floors and “Kentucky marble” stone walls have been transformed into a popular casual bar and restaurant complete with porch dining cooled by ceiling fans and century old shade trees. The original hand-hewn beams, fireplace mantel, hand-cut stone walls and splendid old photographs depicting many of Mercer County’s pre-Prohibition distilleries provide a glimpse back into Harrodsburg’s colorful past. The TAVERN boasts casual fare, great wine and spirits available from the Kentucky-crafted twenty-three foot mahogany bar. It merrily beckons the weary traveler, as did the early Harrodsburg taverns of the 18th and 19th century.

I (Helen) have made a valiant effort to buy local, Kentucky crafts in the last few years. We are fortunate to have many talented artisans in our state. During March the Kentucky Arts Council produces Kentucky Crafted: the Market in Louisville. The Market allows buyers like me to go see, enjoy and order crafts from all over the state. To be able to attend this show, a craftsman must be juried, or judged, by the Council. When they are approved they are allowed to use the Kentucky Crafted symbol on their products. I found Raku horsehair pottery from Columbia and Philpot Kentucky; cookware from Berea, delightful dog, cat and horse prints from Versailles, and beautiful wooden boxes from Kettle, Kentucky. Now I may not know where all these towns are but I do feel fortunate to have the artwork in our shop.
All artists do not go to the show so many local artists are also represented in the shop—jewelry, pottery, weaving, oil paintings, water colors, photography prints. I hope when you come you will enjoy seeing works of art by our Kentucky craftsman. Get updates on the latest arrivals from Helen on Facebook!
