    Highland House Bed & Breakfast is an elegant example of the Creative Eclectic style of architecture. The property, listed on the National Register of Historic Places was originally called Richlawns, an 800 acre farm built by Ralph Barker in 1923. The Highland House is furnished in turn of the century style with many antiques, and the 5 acres of gardens complete with walking paths and secluded benches complement its setting on the banks of the Ohio River.

    Highland House Bed & Breakfast is located on the outskirts of Carrollton, Kentucky, a historic town at the confluence of the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers.

    Living RoomConveniently close to Interstate 71 and approximately 1 hour from Cincinnati, Louisville and Lexington. Carrollton makes a good location to enjoy the many amenities of Northern Kentucky.

    Enjoy racing, boating, fishing, hunting, shopping, State Parks (Big Bone Lick and General Butler), golfing, biking or hiking locally all located in Carroll County. Also, a short drive along the Ohio River takes you to Madison, Indiana, a mecca for river history buffs and antiques lovers. Also nearby are Indy, NASCAR racing at Kentucky Speedway and the Riverboat Casino.

    Guests will enjoy a delicious breakfast, served in the dining room or on the River Porch. Guests are invited to relax and enjoy the living room, river patio, to explore the beach or walk in the gardens.

    General Butler State Resort Park, overlooking the Ohio River valley, is off I-71 Exit 44 on KY-227, (502) 732-4384. A highlight of the park is the Butler Turpin House, an 1859 Greek Revival home with period furnishings and family heirlooms ($3, Feb-Mar W-Sun; April-mid Dec daily; guided tours 10, 1, 2, 3 & 4, not handicapped accessible). The park has a lodge, cottages, campground and golf course (502) 732-4384.

    Factory Stores of America with six outlets, is at Exit 44 off I-71. A short drive north from General Butler is the Masterson House, built in 1790. It is one of the oldest brick houses still standing on the banks of the Ohio River ($1, MD-LD Sat-Sun 1:30-4:30, US-42, Highland Ave. (502) 732-5786, no elevator, two steps). A bit further north is the James Tandy Ellis House on US-42 in Ghent. In nearby Warsaw, watch Ohio River traffic at the Markland Locks & Dam observation tower (free, not handicapped accessible).
