Kentucky has six distinct geographical areas. Initially it was part of Virginia, but became the fifteenth state to join the union in 1792. It has abundant natural resources and at least one impressive natural wonder - the largest cave system in the world is found in the Mammoth Cave National Park. More water flows through Kentucky than through any other state except Alaska. It has productive coalfields but is also home to large herds of deer, elk and wild turkeys. Travelers come for the bourbon, the bluegrass and the horses, and travelers are not disappointed.
The names of the regions are not found on all state maps, but they are incredibly helpful when trying to narrow your travel to areas that most interest you. Do you just love bluegrass music and want to delve into the regions that helped give birth to it? Head to Bluegrass, Kentucky. If you are also interested in the blues and food, Bluegrass, Blues and BBQ Kentucky is for you. Looking at the regions below, you'll know where to find an in near Kentucky's Derby, or where you can explore Daniel Boone's legacy. -
Historically, this is one of Kentucky's most important areas. Located just south of the Ohio River, the actual dividing line between North and South, and the Mason-Dixon Line.
