Guests at The Steamboat House in Galena, Illinois enjoy elegant accommodations in a pre-Civil War mansion.
This beautifully maintained home was built in 1855 by steamboat captain and mining entrepreneur Daniel Harris.
Walk to downtown shops and dining from this luxurious Galena inn.
Enjoy a glass of wine and fine cheeses each night at 5:00, spend time in the garden gazebo, play a game of pool in the billiard room, and savor the 3-course breakfasts.
Five guest suites are available, each featuring a private bath and fireplace. The mansion showcases many antiques and heirloom pieces, but maintains a casual, friendly atmosphere. The meticulous nature of the innkeepers is evident in the spotless rooms and lovely decor. Details such as fresh coffee and tea in the upper main parlor for early morning risers reflect a genuine concern for guest comfort.
The Steamboat House is open year-round, and is centrally heated and air conditioned. With private off-street guest parking at the mansion, the historic town of Galena is only a short walk away.
Nowhere is the scenery more inviting than in Galena, where golf courses, shopping, antiques, hiking and biking are only a few of the leisure activities, and where special events are highlighted during each season of the year. Less than 15 minutes from Galena, Mississippi riverboat cruises, and the Diamond Jo Casino are popular attractions.

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Glen and Char Carlson for sharing their own secrets with BBOnline.com! Why do most travelers stay at your inn?
Many reasons, but guests seem to love our location (only 1 1/2 blocks from downtown Galena), the decor, the history of this amazing building, the absolute cleanliness, and the grounds.
What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?
We are best known for hospitality. Having served over 12,000 guests over the last 14 years, our commitment to our guests’ satisfaction is our first priority. The inn is unique for its wine time (we have a liquor license), and its high style and luxury. What we love about the inn is its history. Susan B Anthony and President US Grant were friends of the owners, and it is one of architect Andrew Jackson Downing’s most well-known designs.
If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?
Hard to narrow it down to one, but the main reason has to be the gorgeous scenery and the fact that we have the longest intact historic Main Street in the country.
What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?
One of our guests told me that this is the only place that she could walk around in bare feet and feel really clean; That she felt absolutely at home here.

The topography, the incredible variety of activities and the NINE wineries.
