Mel and Angie have created the most wonderful memories of Chicago for our whole family. On arriving at the Welcome Inn Manor we were invited to relax and sip wine by the extremely friendly and well informed Alecia. As we toured the house with Alecia our mouths dropped to the floor at the sheer elegance and beauty of the house with its magnificent carved wood work and early twentieth century features. Mel and Angie succeed in combining an atmosphere that is both peaceful and exciting with their considerate and down to earth hospitality. Our children enjoyed all the kindness and attention they received and felt completely at home. The hosts went out of their way to ensure that the children thoroughly enjoyed their stay. Mel created his "World Famous Obstacle Course" for the children in the back garden by combining skipping, juggling, croquet and various activies which they really enjoyed playing. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for Mel and Angie, every small detail was considered. The breakfast was fresh and delicios each morning and included very interesting facts about Chicago along with the all important restaurant tips! We recommend staying at The Welcome Manor Inn with Mel and Angie to anyone visiting Chicago. Prepare yourselves for a unique stay at a fairy tale house with some incredible people. Thankyou Mel and Angie put the kettle on we're coming!!!!! The Valis.

We had a fantastic stay here. No complaints whatsoever. Mell and his wife who run the place are great people doing great work for the local community. Stunning room (we had the Nat King Cole Suite), wonderful breakfasts and a lovely relaxed vibe to the entire house which is beautifully decked out. Highly recommended. Chris & Rowena

What can we say about this wonderful experience? Friendly reception, large room - we stayed in the Nat King Cole suite, with it's magnificent equally large bathroom. Mell and Angie went out of their way to get us acquainted with Chicago, even going so far as to take us to Navy Pier and drop us off when we left them, which was much appreciated during the incredible heatwave. We met some very interesting fellow guests. Thanks Mell and Angie - your interest in us, friendliness and hospitality are unrivalled. Next time we hope to make the Jazz Club with you! The house is beautiful and in a re-gentrifying neighborhood just south of the loop. But the real reason to stay here is Mel and Angie. They treated us like family. We were in Chicago on business and, while they made sure we were able to take care of business, they also helped us relax and have fun the rest of the time. Thanks Mel and Angie. We hope to see you again some day. We have already recommended you to a friend. Dave and Lynn

Welcome Inn -- an historic home in Chicago

My wife and I greatly enjoyed our three-night stay at the Welcome Inn Manor in July 2012. It's a beautiful old home (built in 1892) exquisitely decorated and with super-high ceilings. The hosts, Mell and Angie, are as friendly and interesting as people can be. The common areas downstairs, including the dining room, are beautiful. There we were served breakfasts made by Mell that were so generous that we were set for the day until dinnertime and had no need to stop for lunch as we toured Chicago. There are 3 guest rooms on the 2nd floor. Ours was roomy and comfortable with period furnishings. It has a room with a sink and a toilet and another room with a shower stall. The room we stayed in features a huge oil painting of Dinah Washington in performance. If jazz is your thing, this is your place. There is a fine sound system in the living room on the first floor and we heard nothing but hip sounds coming from it. We also enjoyed the very attractive yard and the deck at the back of the house where we shmoozed and drank wine with other guests. Another asset we took advantage of is the Inn's location. Busses are right there. The Green Line train station is a 5 minute walk and the Red Line is a10 minute walk. This is a place that we can heartily recommend.

    Home away from Home.

If you like a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere this is the place to stay. Welcome Inn Manor is a charming, warmly decorated turn of the century home. Breakfast is wonderful. Room was clean, and a good value. Would we stay at Welcome Inn Manor again? Absolutely! Caution: You do need a sense of adventure as this area of Chicago is transitioning. Properties is the surrounding area are in various stages of repair and decline. We certainly felt safe during our stay at Welcome Inn Manor. Vehicle parking can be a premium in the evening hours. Suggest using Welcome Inn's garaged parking provided at minimal cost. Look forward to our next visit to Chicago and stay at Welcome Inn Manor. Darrell and Lee

We stayed for a week and would definately return. Angie and Mell are very gracious hosts who made sure we had our plans set for the day and helped us get where we needed to be (thank you for the rides!). We especially enjoyed relaxing on the main floor of the house after we were out and about for the day. The house is lovely, and has easy access to public transportation. We were in downtown Chicago in about 20 minutes on the green line.

Thank you for the great hospitality!

Good food, good people and very nice property. Really enjoyed my stay with Mell (and Angie). The historic property has been thoroughly restored with love and care. The area - rich with history and going through revitalization - is conveniently located to pretty much evertything Chicago has to offer. Mell (and Angie) are definitely doing it right!

"Best Place to stay in Chicago"
We really enjoyed our time at Welcome Inn Manor. It was truly like a home away from home (except our home isn't as beautiful). Mell and Angie were so hospitable and Mell's meals were awesome. Being located between both the Red and Green Train lines was quite convenient so we didn't have any issues getting where we wanted to go. We now have a place to call home the next time we are in Chicago: Thanks Mell and Angie!!!

"Charming, quaint and safe. You'll feel like a VIP!"
Mell and Angie are the perfect hosts of this B&B.; Treat yourself to this very comfortable mini mansion, loaded with turn of the century antiques and jazz age memorabilia. The very cozy rooms feature luxury linens, flat screen tvs and fireplaces. A delicious breakfast was served in formal dining room (crackling fire burning) on fine China and crystal. I made special arrangements with Mell and he dropped me off at McCormack Place each morning for my meetings and came to get me later. My stay was such a treat and a relaxing contrast to my business purpose. Mell and Angie are very personable and will share the history of Chicago’s 77 very interesting neighborhoods if you have time to chat. I didn't order the inn’s extraordinary meal plan but another guest did, and she raved about dinner the way I did about the elegant breakfast. You will feel most welcome at the Welcome Inn!

    "Earthy, Yet Sophisticated"
This manor is a marvelous Queen Anne era red brick Victorian home that has been renovated and restored to perfection. Mell and Angie are super-friendly and talkative. When we arrived weary from a five hour drive, Mell greeted us each with a glass of Merlot and a delicious bowl of home-made succotash soup! The house is opulently furnished and the ambience with all of the curios, oak, and period-correct furnishings creates an atmosphere of warmth and beauty seldom matched in our travels. If we have the good fortune of returning to Chicago, we will definitely lodge again at the manor because Mell and Angie are so fond of referring to as "Our Place and Yours”.

    "We did feel very welcome!"
We arrived at the Welcome Inn Manor after a very long drive. We could not have been given a warmer welcome. After a much appreciated cool beverage and chat about Chicago and it's various sights Mel showed us to our room. Our room was lovely. Mel and Angie have a very beautiful home which they have taken great care in decorating. We really enjoyed our four nights at the manor and breakfast was always warm and delicious. Since we had our car, we drove into town every morning. This took us under 20 minutes and the cost was well under 20 dollars for the day for the early bird special.

"Near Chicago's center, great house, fabulous hosts."
We came to Chicago from Colorado for a family wedding, and chose the Welcome Inn Manor from the Internet, primarily because of it's great location - 12 to 15 minutes from the heart of the city. But that turned out to be just the lead in to a fabulous stay. The house is a refurnished grand house from the late 1800's, with gorgeous woodwork and spacious rooms. The decor is a rich and tasteful mixture of Victorian to modern pieces. Best of all are the hosts, Mel and Angie, who are warm, inviting, and lovely to talk with. We would recommend the Welcome Inn Manor for anyone looking for an off-the-main-road adventure and a relaxed stay in a lovely home with charming hosts.

    "Wonderful Bed & Breakfast"
I arrived to a very warm and friendly Mel. The house is simply a beautiful treasure of days gone by. Being a woodworker hobiest, I was amazed at the quality of the mouldings and doors, floors, and staircases in this home. Mel is a very creative person who has decorated the house tastefully as others have said. After settling in my first night Mel offered to drive me and another guest to a new restaurant he recommended called "Chicago's Best Chicken & Waffles" for a culinary and cultural experience that was unmatched. The food was just incredible as well as the hospitality & service. After a delightful meal we called Mel and he quickly returned to pick us up. This kind of service is unique and in many ways is nothing short of extraordinary.

I stayed in the Nat King Cole suite and enjoyed soaking in the huge hot tub relaxing my feet after days of tremendous walking. This was a welcome treat for me. The King size bed in the suite has a very high quality mattress and linens. The room was full of lush towels in various places that added to the decoration and charm. There was a nice ironing board and iron that I used in the morning. Several sitting areas in this suite make it very comfortable to read or relax. My suite had it's own fireplace and 2 flat screen Tv's. If you prefer a shower there is a huge and beautiful tiled shower. The room even has a bidet.

Other reviewers have accurately described the quality of the breakfast. A young intern came in each morning with a chef vest and together with Mel created culinary delights. I don’t want to spoil the fun by revealing the dishes but trust me you will be delighted. The coffee Mel uses is first Class.

I can't say enough about what a treasure it is to experience this wonderful Inn. In fact I can't wait to go back with my family the next time. Don't be afraid of the emerging neighborhood as Mel has done an excellent job to ensure that the house is safe and secure!

"A Wonderful experience for our first Bed & Breakfast stay"
First time visitors to Chicago and we are happy we stayed at the Welcome Inn Manor. Mel and Angie were wonderful hosts, and they have excellent tastes in decorating and in dedication to revitalizing their neighborhood & their home. After staying at the Inn, we felt we had a glimpse of living in the glamorous turn of the century era. The details to refurbishing the house were authentic, the artwork of legendary jazz musicians was bold and refreshing, plus the suite was equipped with the all the modern comforts of the 21st century. The breakfasts each morning were very yummy served in a family style dining room. It was nice to have the smell of bacon & sausage cooking downstairs as we getting ready for the day in our suite. The best type of alarm clock ever! Quiet Neighborhood in transition... it's all good. We felt very safe and had no trouble with transportation to and from the community. It was a short 15 minute cab ride to downtown, or a nice walk to the public train system. It's a unique way to really visit a city by staying in a neighborhood to get the feel of Chicago. We had a great experience, and would definitely stay there again. Thank you Mel and Angie for sharing your home with us!
