Forest Suite
Originally designed to be a conference room, the Forest Suite now headlines as our “log bedroom.” It is a favorite for parents who wish to have their children sleep in the same room with them. As we were frantically working to open as a B and B back in the summer of 2001, I (Daryl) said to Al…”Honey, why don’t you just build us log beds for the Forest Suite?” (Ah, a BIG honey-do!) Within a few days, Al created the king, daybed and trundle frames from lodge pole pine logs with blued pine boards. (A friend who also builds with logs donated some already peeled trees for the project.) We usually refer to Al’s building style as “early massive!” A small electric fire view stove contributes to the ambiance with heat in winter, or without it in summer! Our guests enjoy the pretty flames regardless of the weather. A private bath located just across the hall has a shower/tub combination, toilet, and sink. The view from the Forest Suite looks into what we affectionately call “the ball field.” In our dreams it was slated to host baseball games. This clear spot in the woods actually provides grazing for cattle at times, and deer (often a doe and fawn) regularly!
Summer Rates: $125 plus tax for 2. Additional guests including children over 2, $25. Pets $10.
Off Season Rates: $115 plus tax for 2. Additional guests including children over 2, $25. Pets $10.The Bunkhouse
Our initial venture into building with logs was to put up a garage. We lived in it while we raised our first six kids! Since then it has had a complete remodel. And a new name…the Bunkhouse. The kitchen features a stove, refrigerator (with ice maker), dishwasher, oak cabinets–thanks to Al’s carpentry skills, sink and laundry. A futon in the living room provides extra bed space for the larger family or group. This house has many stairs and is not wheel chair accessible. The Bunkhouse sleeps seven with ease. Two bedrooms are upstairs–one with a queen bed and the other with a queen plus a swinging twin. (Even adults have been known to argue over who gets to sleep in the swinging bed!) The futon in the living room adds space for two more people to sleep. The bathroom sports an old fashioned claw foot tub with hand held shower. In winter, hot water is circulated under to tile floor to keep your feet toasty warm! A wood stove in the living room adds to the country flavor.
During the summer season, we rent the Bunkhouse as a stand alone cabin. The beds are made up when you come and we provide towels, pots and pans, dishes, etc. You bring your own food and are on your own for all meals, including breakfast. We clean your bathroom once a day. The Bunkhouse has lots of stairs and is not suitable for folks who have difficulty walking or climbing. Bedrooms are upstairs. Kitchen and dining area are on the main level. The living room and bathroom are down another (!) set of stairs. Why so many stairs? Well, as a garage, the living room area was to drive a tractor into to work on. The dining/kitchen area…the shop with tools. The upstairs…a storage loft. Ah, the best laid plans…
Summer Rates: $175 per night plus tax for 1-7 people, pets $10 each. You cook your own breakfast and make your own beds. We clean the bathroom daily.
Off Season Rates: $115 per night double occupancy. $25 extra person over age 2, pets $10 each. During the off season, we usually cook breakfast for Bunkhouse guests. If you would like to have a group of 5-8 people and cook for yourselves, the cost per night is $150.Red Barn & Cedar
Way back in the 1940′s in a field near the county road, right here on what we call Cedar Mountain Farm, a big hay barn was built. The builders painted it in a traditional farm fashion–red. We know that it wasn’t painted again between 1950 and the time it blew down in a storm during the late 1980′s. Typical farmers, we salvaged barn wood from the “Old Red Barn” and reused the now well-weathered panels on the sides of other barns here on the farm. As we worked to finish a basement room in the main cabin, we remembered that a bit of that siding remained. The last unused boards from the original Old Red Barn now grace the Red Barn Room. The floor likewise reflects our thrifty nature–most of the tiles were leftovers from the rest of the house.
Cedar, the companion room to Red Barn, boasts newer paneling. About a third of the way up Cedar Mountain lies a favorite family spot we call the picnic grounds. (I remember during my childhood Daddy would trek up the hill with homemade root beer. He placed it in Lightning Creek to cool for our family gatherings.) Right around the year 2000, hubby Al harvested a large Cedar tree from this picnic area–a leaner that needed thinning out. He cut boards using a portable sawmill, ran them through the planer and used them to finish this room!
Summer Rates: $110 (plus tax) for 2. Additional guests including children over 2, $25. Pets $10.
Off Season Rates: $90 (plus tax) for 2. Additional guests including children over 2, $25. Pets $10.Granny's Woods and Spring
Granny’s and Spring are located in one wing of the main house. The whole wing is lockable for privacy. Granny’s Woods, with its queen bed, looks out toward the west on a well-thinned woods where we sometimes graze cattle. The room features furniture from Daryl’s grandparents, Henry and Teresa. They were antique buffs and loved beautiful, useful pieces. We believe that this furniture dates to the 1880′s. In addition to the impressive headboard, Grandpa Henry’s dresser and bedside table are in this room. Log walls and cedar ceiling surround you as you sleep. The quilt in Granny’s Woods was made by Al’s sister, Sylvia. The pattern, Log Cabin at a Snail’s Pace, depicts our slow construction of this big cabin. We dug the hole for the basement in 1989. It took nearly 10 years of work before we moved in!
The bathroom for Granny’s and Spring has a large walk in shower with two shower heads and a jetted “big tubby.” Guests enjoy a luxurious soak with their stay. Or they send all the kids into the shower at once for a quick clean up. Spring room looks out on the garden area and has views of Cedar Mountain. Grandma Teresa’s dresser sits in one corner, opposite the full/twin bunk bed. When a couple chooses to stay in Granny’s, we do not rent Spring to anyone else outside of their own family members.
