US Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarter Program 29 Sep 2012, 12:25 am

The official release of the new Hawaii Volcanoes National Park quarter was on August 29, 2012 near Kilauea, the Big Island Volcano depicted on the coin. This year, the World Heritage Program, which is operated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and  Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is marking its 40th anniversary. It designated Volcanoes National Park as a World Heritage site in 1987 for its “superlative attributes of universal value important to the common heritage of humanity- in particular, the parks biological, cultural and geologic resources”. The quarter features an engraved image of the eruption on Kilauea’s East Rift Zone. It is designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles L. Vickers. Puu Oo, a cinder cone on Kilauea Volcano’s eastern flanks began erupting in January 1983. The on-going 29. year Puu O’o eruption, is among the longest lasting Hawaiian eruption in recorded history.  For more information about Hawaii Volcanoes National Park go to their website www.nps.gov/havo/index.htm  These collector quarters can be obtained from  www.govmint.com/

Coffee in Hawaii 19 Sep 2012, 7:56 pm

Coffee is grown on almost all the Hawaiian Islands, with many farms dating back to the 1800′s.  This photo I took of ripening cherries on a coffee shrub was right off the highway going holo holo circling the island along the Kona mountain slopes. Many farms are still owned by 5th generation families. If you are on the island the week of Nov. 3-11, 2012,  take part in the Kona Coffee Festival:  parade,  cupping competition,  Kona Coffee Recipe contest and a picking contest .                 konacoffeefest.com                 konacupping.com

Fresh roasted coffee beans direct from farms can be purchased to take home or enjoyed  along the way. Look for 100%.

The district of Ka’u has produced coffee of exceptional quality. The newly opened Ka’u Coffee Mill gives you a taste of the award winning coffee and see the process of  beans drying to roasting.       kaucoffeemill.com

Hawai’i coffee growers take pride in their unique beans and continue the romance and tradition of the coffee industry.

Brown, our young guest at the Teapot Cottage, 9 yrs old came in 2nd in his 9-13 yrs division and 29th overall out of 281 runners. He received a lei, his race shirt and hopefully will take home happy memories of his stay in Volcano!
