    Volcano Guest House - Green HouseGreat for family reunions and other gatherings and retreats! We can handle up to 20 people staying and can make arrangements for 40, between us and our neighbor's B&B.

    Each unit's kitchen has rice cooker, refrigerator, stove, microwave, toaster, and traditional mismatched utensils. Each unit has a phone, TV, VCR. Cottages have porches and outside sinks available. Claudia's Place and the Upstairs have access to our front porch, where the goodies are.

    You can wash your laundry in our front loading washer and hang it in our greenhouse laundry center. We live right here, so you can borrow stuff. We share books, umbrellas, videos, advice, local politics, cooking supplies, our favorite walks. Simple breakfast materials available 24 hours a day. No schedule, no fuss.

    In 6 acres of native high-altitude tropical rainforest, five minutes from Ka'u desert. Where Windward meets Leeward. Each unit designed and built by owner/operators Bonnie Goodell and Alan Miller, who have designed and built over a dozen cottages for local people in Volcano. Alan specializes in fine finish work of local and recycled woods. Bonnie is a planner and designer specializing in sustainability. This is a sustainable village in progress.

    Front porches open on our private village lane. You can park near your door. Windows look out on the forest. The viewing garden is right in the middle, with natural (fed by rain, not pumped) waterfalls and ponds.

    We are about a half hour from Hilo Airport, two and a half hours from Kona Airport. You'll need to rent a car.

    From National Park: Right on Jade (1st right after 26 mile marker)

    From Hilo: Left on Jade (2nd left after 25 mile marker)

    Then: Take the last left off Jade - Ala Ohia Street (just past 13th Street)

    Go down Ala Ohia until you pass the Dead End sign - look on the right for the Volcano Guest House sign, at 11-3733 Ala Ohia Street.

    Groups Of All Sizes From 5 To 30

    Families or groups up to seven can rent 'Akala House, or 'Olapa House and use the whole house including kitchen, as well as have the use, with the rest of our guests, of the Breakfast Lanai and Spa.

    Groups of up to 14 can take both houses, and for a small additional fee they can use the studio for yoga, meditation, hula or other dance, or a meeting with seating on floor cushions. In addition the loft in 'Akala and the living room in 'Olapa are both spacious. There is ample kitchen space for cooking for a whole halau or other retreat.

    The Breakfast Lanai can seat 20-30 people informally, and has a gas barbecue just out the back door.

    Our sister property, Ohana House, another three-bedroom house is connected by a beautiful path through the rainforest. If you add Ohana, 'Olapa, and 'Akala, up to 20 people can stay in the three houses, have three kitchens, 8 bathrooms, and use of the retreat studio.     The StudioGroups that take both houses can also supplement with additional cottages or apartments. All may use the Breakfast Lanai and Spa, but unless you book all of our units, remember you will be sharing the Breakfast Lanai with others.

    If you have over 20 people and you want to have a place to dine all together and have meetings, please contact us about reserving the whole place, so that your group can have exclusive use of the Breakfast Lanai for group meals and meetings. We will try to accommodate the configuration you need.

    Two night minimum, more for bigger groups. We can help with arrangements for food and other kokua (cooperation/help), for your needs. Please email us as soon as possible so we can make the best arrangements we can for your group. The Studio is 24 feet wide by 32 feet long.
