  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Kelsea Garlich and Leslie Shimizu for sharing their own secrets with BBOnline.com!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

Volcano Village Lodge provides travelers with a unique lodging facility located just 2 miles outside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We invite adventure-seeking, lava enthusiasts to relax and rejuvenate after a day of activity in one of our private rainforest cottages. We typically see a lot of honeymoon couples and couples celebrating a special occasion (anniversary, birthday, etc.). And of course, lots of guests who have it on their bucket list to see the active lava flows.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

Our unique property has just 5 private guest cottages set up in the middle of the rainforest. Guests are immersed into the rainforest environment while having all of the comforts of home. Many guests say “your lodge was the perfect place to relax after several busy days of sightseeing... Next time we come back, we will stay longer!”

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

Volcano Village is known for its close proximity to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – home to world’s most active volcano.

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

Our guests frequently comment on our staff’s attention to detail – from helping them plan their day trips to stocking each guest room with everything they could need (flashlights/binoculars, towel warmers, plush bath robes and slippers, and more!). Knowing we are providing a 5 star service is the best compliment we could receive!

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

We are located at approximately 3500’ elevation. Our cooler temperatures provide a comfortable environment for a day of hiking and exploring inside the national park. Not to mention, the mosquitos don’t venture up this high!

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

We recommend at least 1-2 days of exploring the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, 1 day exploring the southern part of the island (Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, South Point, Green Sands Beach), and 1 day exploring Hilo and the Puna District.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

Volcano Village Lodge is just a mile from the local restaurants and shops in Volcano Village. There is also an excellent Farmer’s Market on Sundays that we encourage guests to check out!

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

Harpers Ferry has several good casual dining options. For a special occasion, try the fresh local ingredients served up at Dish in Charles Town, WV or Grandale Farm in Neersville, VA.

Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?

For information about the Big Island of Hawaii, we recommend visiting the Hawaii Tourism Authority’s website: www.gohawaii.com/big-island. We recommend Warren Costa of Native Guide Hawaii as an excellent guide for the national park and surrounding areas.

How many rooms does your inn have?

Volcano Village Lodge has a total of 5 guest rooms. Each room can hold between 2-5 people. Breakfast is included and each room comes with a kitchenette for our guests to use.

    Do you accept pets?

We do not accept pets at this time.

  • Area Information

    Volcanoes National Park

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The park encompasses diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, offers scientists and visitors alike insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and views of dramatic volcanic landscapes.
