We invite interested guests to learn about local culture/agriculture and Hawaiian healing arts. Perhaps you want to get your hands in the soil helping us develop a self-sustaining garden using ancient Hawaiian agricultural practices combined with permaculture. Permaculture Aloha Aina (love of the land) teaches us to give to the land before taking from the land. For those who wish to swim with dolphins, we gladly guide you to nearby bays where we familiarize you with respectful "dolphin etiquette."
Welcome to our home from the friendly Dragonfly Ohana and Barbara "Kenonilani" Moore, steward of the land, and soul proprietor of the Dragonfly.
This beautiful country estate offers many scenic views of the ocean. Without a house in sight as one looks down at the sea, grazing land provides an idyllic buffer of privacy. On the dry, sunny side of the Big Island, at an ideal elevation of 600 feet, the temperature is usually about 72 degrees year round with little wind and only moderate rainfall - enough to keep everything green. It's a 3-minute drive to the Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park, 10 minutes to Kealakekua Underwater Sea Life Preserve, and 15 minutes to Ho'okena Beach Park, a lovely sandy cove. These areas are famous for an abundance of playful dolphins and the finest snorkeling in all of Hawaii. For your convenience, The Dragonfly provides towels and rents snorkel gear, wet suits and life vests. We offer guided tours for Dragonflyers who often experience the indescribable joy of having friendly, wild turtles and dolphins swim with them in these beautiful bays.

"When we found you on the web, we knew the Dragonfly was the place for our wedding and honeymoon. But when we got here, we found it far surpassed our wildest dreams. Thank you for guarding our privacy while making us feel supremely pampered—from the comfy feather bed to the down-home spiritual ceremony followed by the divinely scrumptious catered meal on our Honeymoon Suite deck. Experiencing the spinner dolphins close up was icing on the wedding cake! We loved every magical Dragonfly minute of our twin flames union."
Terry and Jeaneen Whistler
Jeaneen and Terry Whistler of Reno got married by our wonderful minister, Penei, while visiting us this May. Their web site, www.twinflamestudio.com, shows Terry’s portrayal of the spiritually erotic intensity of their enchanting connection. Terry’s work has been selected to enhance the walls of Caesar's Palace nightclub in Lake Tahoe. While at the Dragonfly, Terry and Jeaneen became inspired to organize workshop retreats one of which they want to have at the Dragonfly, sharing their vision of sexuality combined with spirituality.
Beautiful ceremonies are written and performed by Rev. Lona Lyons, a licensed, non-denominational minister. Budget and luxury packages include sunset beach weddings; renewal of vows; commitment ceremonies; partners for life ceremonies; the divine marriage...
Dragonfly was the best place to relax and rejuvenate. It was such a highlight we returned at the end of our trip. The rest of our stay was in our tent with sleepless nights.

Our stay at the Dragonfly will never be forgotten. For us, it was wonderful to be in a place where respect for and admiration of the natural world goes hand in hand with being on vacation. Traveling seems to often involve staying in sterile hotel rooms, the use of toxic chemicals by lodging staff, and meals with questionable nutritional value. It was so fun, interesting, and delicious to have breakfast with Barbara. The location is fabulous. Quotes from our kids: "I liked your dogs." Keston "You have the best food in the world!" Tannis Thanks, Barbara, for everything. We hope we can visit you and your magical place again.
Love, Teri, Shane, Olivia, Keston and Tannis
We would like to say how much we enjoyed our stay at the Dragonfly Ranch. We chose the Dragonfly to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary because it seemed like the kind of place where we could find ourselves “immersed” in the real Hawaii; where there were no dividing lines between us and the island, no concrete and glass walls framing sterile facades of an idealized image. We made no mistakes in that regard. What a pleasure to feel the jasmine-scented cool of the night, the gentle warmth of the day shared with nature, the geckos and even with the playful dogs Iolani, Kiki and Makana. Barbara and her staff…more like an extended family, made us feel as if it was our home as well and showed a real caring for the two of us. If you like it rustic and totally in touch with your surroundings, with the freedom to explore and the opportunity to grow personally and with your mate, then a stay the Dragonfly will be a rewarding experience. We highly recommend it.

A small sign on the road promised us ‘Tropical Lodging’. We called the indicated number and found much more than a Bed & Breakfast on our way: Dragonfly Ranch is a wonderful place to immerse into the living spirit of Aloha and the tropical nature of Hawaii. The open-heartedness of Barbara, the owner, and of her visitors; the imaginative and inspiring details of the tree houses interior decoration; talking to exceptional people; snorkeling at a great spot near the impressive Pu’uhonua o Honaunau Park – we felt like having found paradise in paradise. One thing is sure – we must come back.

"Our stay at Dragonfly was one our very favorites. We've stayed in guest houses, hotels, and B & B's all over the world. The Dragonfly is a totally unique and lovely oasis with a very relaxed vibe, which attracts interesting and open-minded people. Barbara is a darling, and the Dragonfly team was wonderful. We can't wait to come back."

"we had a great time staying at your place and it definitely made our trip. It was so nice to be able to make ourselves at home. I loved getting up in the morning, tying on my sarong, and coming into the kitchen to find a mug of whatever revitilizing tea was brewing. Also, we enjoyed the hearty wholegrain breakfasts with golden flaxseeds, hempseeds and other goodies! We came home and were inspired to climb the ladder to better health. The casual, friendly atmosphere was just what we needed. Thanks for inviting me to join you in a Pilates class the very first day while Leonard had his personal yoga practice on the lanai. It felt more like visiting friends than the standard B&B fare. Barbara, feel free to us this as a testimonial to how fabulous the Dragonfly Ranch is!"

Fifteen years ago we came to Dragonfly Ranch with our two year old son who had extremely bowed legs. Barbara did her massage and energy magic on him. Months later we noticed his legs were straightened. Now we're returned with our teenage boys. All they say is "This is the coolest place".

Thank you so much for everything. You really made our days here in the Dragonfly paradise something very special that we will treasure in our hearts and souls. You have been so helpful, understanding and always with a smile no matter what, a rare thing to experience such big heartedness. We wish you all the best and hope to see you again.

Thank you for an experience of a lifetime! Me and my family have had the most beautiful of times! Words are sometimes a poor substitute for emotions; alas - so be it! None the less, your service, your ability of helping and the smile on my son's face says it all.

Dear Barbara, We just wanted to take a moment to tell you how much we enjoyed our return visit to Dragonfly. We were happy to see that, in an era of unbridled growth in the Kona region, the ranch remains unchanged. Our only regret is that it was such a short visit. Dragonfly Ranch is one of those unique places where peace and tranquility rule; and just being on the grounds bring a sense of calm. We hope to return again and again.
Sincerely, Mike and Sue from Cleveland
At a place like yours one likes to be, in a paradise surrounded by the sea, where understanding, heart and beauty are, and a healthy meal is never far, where a stranger not just finds a rest, but also gets a body-treatment at its best, where you can train the intellect, with Barbara until it is perfect, where body, soul and mind, meet a staff and host that are so kind, where a guest becomes a friend, right from the beginning to the end, where no one likes to say goodbye, to this paradise called "Dragonfly".
The Writer's Studio was perfect for us to stay with our 6 month old baby. We brought along our Amby bed (www.ambybaby.com) which was completely portable and fit nicely in our room. We had plenty of room to spread out, a comfortable bed and a little kitchen nook, fully supplied with cooking utensils that helped make vacationing with a baby a very easy and accommodating experience. The staff made us feel very welcome while Barbara was away and always had a delicious veggie friendly breakfast and fresh organic Kona coffee waiting for us every morning. Also we appreciated meeting Barbara and learning about liquid vitamins. Taking the Vibe after our looong overnight flight helped a lot with the jet lag. Staying at the Dragonfly was a unique and wonderful experience!
Big Island Hawaii Activites
One of the best snorkling spots on all of the island is just a few minutes from the Dragonfly Ranch. Called "two step" by the locals and right beside the famous Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, this is a must see under water wonderland. Dolphins, sea turtles and myriad colorful fish can be seen here as well as the most incredible crystal clear blue water. The Dragonfly Ranch has a full supply of snorkle gear and its use is included in your stay.
Also just 10 minutes from the Dragonfly Ranch is the legendary Kealakekua Bay. Kealakekua means "pathway of the gods" in Hawaiian. It is also the first landing spot of explorer Captain James Cook, who brought the Hawaiian islands to the attention of western civilization. What it means for you is the premier kayaking spot on the Big Island known for wild spinner dolphins and occasionally whales as well as incredible snorkeling and beautiful grandeur. The Dragonfly Ranch has a double seat kayak available for rent to our guests.
Commune with wild dolphins
The bay at Pu'uhonua O Honaunau and Kealakekua bay as well as Ho'okena Beach are known for wild dolphins. It is forbidden to chase or otherwise try and swim with dolphins however they are quite curious and quite often will approach snorklers. Its important not to try and touch dolphins. The bays are their resting places and its advisable to go early, 7:00 am and no later than 10:00 am when the dolphins are more active. After 10:00 am they become more restful and we leave the area so they can rest.
Misha Sperker of Old Hawaiian Coffee is our good friend and local dive master. You will not find a more knowledgeable and friendly dive experience than Misha. Misha is an explorer, farmer, Hawaiian antique art dealer, aguanaut and extremely interesting person. Just to hang out with him for a few hours is priceless.
Winter is whale watch season in Hawaii when the majestic humpback whales make their 2000+ mile journey from Alaska to the warm waters of Hawaii to birth their calfs and mate. Here is a list of whale watching providers.
We highly recommend a visit to Old Hawaiian Coffee to see a real working coffee farm. Also the Living History Coffee Farm of the Kona Historical Society. " Living History Farm brings the coffee pioneer's story to life by depicting the daily lives of early Japanese immigrants during the period of 1920-1945." (from the Historical Society's Website).

For an authentic Hawaiian experience, a ride on Captain Kiko's Hawaiian double hulled canoe is in order. www.waakaulua.com/
By far the most professional, comfortable and informative helicopter tours are provided by Blue Hawaiian. We will be happy to arrange a tour for you or tell them the Dragonfly Ranch sent you for a 5% discount.
At over 13,000 ft, Mauna Kea is one of the worlds top observatories (no pun intended). The summit of Mauna Kea is not to be missed. If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, you can go yourself. For guided tours, try this list: www.bigisland.org/activities-air/13/star-gazing
Hawaii Lomi Lomi Massage
Licensed massage therapists are available on call to give a variety of massages - including lomilomi, shiatsu and swedish. Barbara had the good fortune to study lomilomi (ancient Hawaiian massage) with Aunty Margaret Machado 25 years ago. She enjoys teaching people how to work on one another in the way this ancient Hawaiian art was traditionally practiced within the family to stay healthy and emotionally connected. more info

The Dragonfly Ranch is in a beautiful location on the Big Island's Kona Coast, known as "The Playground of the Royalty."
Forty minutes (26 miles) south of Keahole-Kona Airport, this soulful retreat center is a half hour drive (19 miles) from the town of Kailua-Kona. Near the ocean on a lightly-travelled road, we are just 2 miles above Honaunau Bay with it's historic healing temple in the center of the ancient "Place of Sanctuary." The Dragonfly Ranch is a modern day sanctuary, blessed to be in the middle of the "Sacred Healing Triangle" where Samoans and Tahitians of ancient times sailed for healing purposes. This country estate has a view of the ocean, without a house in sight, overlooking grazing land that provides an idyllic buffer of privacy. On the dry, sunny side of the Big Island, at the perfect elevation of 600 feet, the temperature is usually about 72° year round with soft breezes and only moderate rainfall. It's a 3 minute drive to the Pu'uhonua O Honaunau National Historic Park, 10 minutes to Kealakekua Underwater Sea Life Preserve, and 15 minutes to Ho'okena Beach Park, a lovely sandy cove. These areas are famous for an abundance of playful dolphins and the finest snorkeling in all of Hawaii. Dragonflyers often experience the indescribable joy of having friendly, wild turtles and dolphins swim with them in these beautiful bays.
Getting To The Dragonfly Ranch
From Kona Keahole International Airport:
Phone to let us know your ETA (808) 328-9570 or (808) 328-2159. If it is after 4:00PM, the traffic has become very bad and it is better to enjoy dinner in town and miss the traffic by 7:00PM.
Turn right out of the airport onto the main highway. Go past Kailua up a 10 minute hill. You will reach a plateau and pass through the little towns of Honalo, Kainaliu, Kealakekua and Captain Cook. Next you'll see a highway sign for Honaunau; watch for highway mile marker signs (small, rectangular and green)!
After you pass the 104 mile marker, look to turn right onto Route 160, which is clearly marked by a large sign: "Pu'uhonua o Honaunau". We are located exactly one and one half miles down Route 160, on the right side. Look straight down the road and you will see two arrows marking a sharp bend in the road and a large sign saying DRAGONFLY. Just beyond the second arrow on the right you'll see a large mail box on an ohia post saying "Welcome". Turn right, into our driveway (above which hangs a dragonfly goddess). A sign says: "Dragonfly Ranch."
After you enter the gate, drive at a slow, steady pace (fluffy pomeranians will stay out of the way) straight up the steep driveway to the unloading area. After unloading please go back down the drive and park in the lower lot under the arching monkey pod trees. Someone should come out to greet you and show you to your room, welcoming you to enjoy the common areas.
From Hilo or Volcano:
Coming from the South on Hwy 11, turn left onto Route 160 after the 103 mile marker. From that point, follow the above directions. You can stop in Na'alehu, at the Na'alehu Fruit Stand (on the right) for juices and snacks.
If you wish to call about where to eat or possibly sharing a meal with us from the garden (with fresh "blessed" fish if our family fisherman is lucky), we will be happy to help you discover the most delightful food available (missing the bad traffic between 4pm to 7pm).
Wishing you a safe journey!
