Such a great graduation party idea — some recent guests held a true Hawaiian Luau here at Ashford Manor, with all the fixin’s from Hawaiian Style Grill, based in Augusta. We spoke with co-owner of the grill, Tammy, who said this is a family business — her husband’s mother has been presenting traditional Hawaiian dance at parties and events for 25 years. About a year ago, she joined forces with the Grill and together they create catered parties that bring the Luau to you.

It looked like the guests were having a great time — the Hawaiian style barbecue smelled delicious, and Tammy explained the menu included Teriyaki Chicken, Kalua Pork and macaraoni salad — typical back-yard barbecue food you’d find if you visited Hawaii. Stationed around the property were tables set with gorgeously decorated treats and adornments, as well as people dressed in traditional Hawaiian attire handing out leis for the guests. The evening also included spinning fire and traditional dance. This was a fantastic collaboration — a Luau in a Box, Dave called it. This family was super fun to work with and watch how they brought the party to life.

Hear ye some history! And have ye some fun!

This Sunday will be all kinds of historical fun — the Oconee County Historical Society is hosting History on the Lawn here at Ashford Manor and Ashford on Main — and it’s all about taking the yawns out of dusty old history books and bringing Oconee’s past to life.

We’re especially emphasizing the invitation for people to bring in old documents and papers, photos and memorabilia, which will be scanned on the spot (there’ll be four scanning stations — you’ll get the originals right back). These, along with audio and video recordings, which will be captured via three recording stations, will be preserved and uploaded to become a virtual repository of Oconee’s history.

As for other goodies, there’ll be prizes for best historical costumes, games and kids activities, music from the Red Oak String Band, musket fire on the half hour by members of the Sons of the American Revolution, and a day-long tea party hosted by the esteemed Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant and her entourage, Ladies of Distinction.

Locals can also try to stump the stars — we’ll have a panel of venerable Oconee residents to whom visitors can pose questions about past events and facts about the area.

Of course, there’ll be history books on display, along with photo and slide presentations as well.

Please join us for an all-day picnic and fun — bring your own food or order from a restaurant across the street, and spend the day with us sharing and learning about the amazing history of Oconee and Watkinsville. It’s all about us!

Our First Friday event celebrating Miss Louise’s 100th Birthday was a smash hit! Thank you to everyone who came over to wish her well, and to Blane Marable for this great collection of photos

Our amazing hosts, Mario & Dave (bottom photo — these guys seriously do NOT slow down, y’all) threw a fantastic party, decking the whole front of Ashford On Main in pink lights (even the giant chandelier) in honor of Miss Louise being a breast cancer survivor, and with the help of ads in the Oconee Leader and Oconee Enterprise — which both featured Miss Louise in front page articles, as well — invited the community to come by for a family event that featured performances by the Red Oak String Band in the front yard, and members of Canopy Studio’s Repertory Company in the back.

Miss Louise started the evening greeting visitors, then was treated to a giant sparkler-covered birthday cake to end the evening. In the meantime, visitors donated money to some local organizations and families in need in honor of Miss Louise — instead of gifts, she asked that people do something kind for one another. We love Miss Louise and are so grateful to have her wisdom and generosity here, where she’s the matriarch of Ashford Manor B&B and Ashford On Main — luckily her beloved son Dave is kind enough to share her with us all.

Thanks again to everyone who visited and wished Miss Louise a happy birthday, and may the kind deeds in her honor continue!

Recently the Boys & Girls Club of Athens hosted its annual gala fundraiser, Evening in the Garden, at Ashford Manor. This was the first year the organization has held the event here, and it was a great success, raising more than $30,000. Around 200 people got to sample food from local restaurants, which offered food and wine pairings. And Ashford Manor favorites The Common People Band got the whole party rockin’!

Participating restaurants included Last Resort, Chops & Hops, Kumquat Mae, 5 Bar, Copper Creek, Branded Butcher, Square One Fish Co., and George’s Lowcountry Table, along with liquid offerings from Tall Boy Beverage Co. and Terrapin Beer Co.

Party-goers got to try their luck at a craps table where the grand prize was a Mercedes Benz from Mercedes Benz of Athens (sadly no one went home with that sweet little ride) and auction items lined the tables with signed Atlanta Falcons and Braves memorabilia along with plenty of UGA goodies for all the Dawgs fans, signed guitars from local rock stars, art by local artists (and some Boys & Girls club kids, too!) and a huge assortment of items from local stores.

We spoke with Sterling Gardner, Director of Resource Development at the Boys & Girls Club of Athens, who said the patrons had a great time and loved Ashford Manor as the venue for the event, and he hopes they’ll hold it here again — we hope so too! Thanks everyone, we were happy and honored to be a part of your evening for such a great cause.

Ashford Manor’s gracious and elegant matriarch, Miss Louise, turns 100 next month, and in honor of her very big day, we’ve asked those who know her — as well as those who don’t — to share an act of kindness. In other words, do something kind for someone and tell us about it so we can present it as a gift to Miss Louise.

In her hundred years on this earth, Miss Louise has given so much to so many, so what better gift than the passing along of her good example to others?

Email us a note about your kindness and we’ll post it here and to add it to a special wall we’re creating on her birthday so she can witness all of this goodness.
