June 2: Drake's Raid re-enactment | StAugustine.com 29 May 2012, 8:36 am
June 2: Drake's Raid re-enactment | StAugustine.comEnglish raiders under the command of the infamous Sir Francis Drake will rampage through the streets of St. Augustine on June 2 in a re-enactment of the raid of 1586.
Conducted by Searles Buccaneers and St. Augustine’s Men of Menendez, the re-enactment provides an up-close look at what it was like for St. Augustine's residents to defend their city against overwhelming odds.
On June 6, 1586, Drake's 23 ships and 2,000 Englishmen attacked the city with cannon from Anastasia Island. The next day, they stormed through the streets and burned St. Augustine to the ground.
The re-enactment will feature a 16th century encampment from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, 11 Magnolia Ave., from San Marco Ave., in uptown St. Augustine.
The encampment, which will be open to the public, will feature military drills and period skill demonstrations. St. Johns County residents with ID are admitted free.
At 7 p.m., a sacking and burning of the town re-enactment will begin at the City Gates on Saint George Street and will continue down to the Plaza de la Constitucion, between King Street and Cathedral Place.
