  • History

The Magnolia Inn was built in 1926 at the height of the Florida boom as the residence of Mr. L.R. Heim. Mr. Heim was very wealthy as a manufacturer of ball bearings in Connecticut and held patents of the Centerless grinder used in their manufacturing. After visiting Mount Dora, he returned in 1924 and purchased what had been Chautaugua Park on the South side of Lake Gertrude and the land to the west that extends to the Golden Triangle Shopping Center today.

Mr. Heim started the sub-division called Sylvan Shores; he also helped found the First National Bank being one of its largest stockholders, and in 1929 he personally wrote a check for $50,000 to help the bank survive. Mr. Heim at one time not only owned the town newspaper but donated the street lighting still seen along Old 441 on the shore of Lake Dora and the land and stadium known as "Heim Field Ball Park".

Magnolia Inn has been a Bed and Breakfast since 1994 with Inn-Keeper Lucy Stewart to assist you in every detail of your stay. The Inn features 4 guest rooms in the main house and 1 carriage house suite separate from the main house. Each room has a private bath / shower, King or Queen beds, antiques, oriental carpets, lace, stereo TV's, CD players, Wireless Internet in the main house and a full breakfast is served.

There is a Gazebo with comfortable chairs and tables to spend your time. Sit on the patio, read a book, swing in our "couples" swing or lounge under the huge oaks. You're invited to experience the splendor of our Mediterranean estate.

Magnolia Inn received the award for "Best Breakfast in the Southeast" for the years of 2005 and 2006 by it's guests and Arrington Publishing.

We still maintain the same standard of breakfasts each and every day. Come and spend a wonderful relaxing time with us and experience the Charm of "Something Special" Mount Dora.

“Very enjoyable - This stately home has 4 guest rooms & unattached cottage. We stayed in the garden room. Has a king size bed & ample sized room. It only has a shower-which is very small-so, if you are a large person-it wouldn't work for you..There are smaller rooms & larger room with tubs The home is charming with all its furniture & whimsy decor. The inn keeper, Debra, was just delightful. She couldn't do enough to insure a pleasant stay. There was always coffee & tea, cookies & snacks available. The breakfasts were not overwhelming, but just enough & tasty to get one thru to a late lunch. The home was amazingly clean given the amount of objects that would need to be dusted. We were there on New years weekend & enjoyed all the Christmas decorations. It is only a couple blocks to the downtown historic area. So we were able to leave the car & walk everywhere.”

“Wonderful Experience! My Mother and I stayed here for a holiday getaway, and stayed in the Garden room! The house was beautifully decorated for the holidays, and we enjoyed the Victorian decor and warm ambiance of homemade cookies and assortment of teas and coffees. There were ample areas to sit and relax, with books to read, or holiday music softly playing. Just a short walk to the main village area with many little stores and cafes. We had a lovely lunch at the Garden Gate Tea House, decorated in gorgeous "shabby chic" Victorian! If you love that decor, you will soak up your senses.Mt.Dora had a beautiful sunset by the lake, and at night, the park had a wonderful display of lights. Deborah, the Innkeeper went out of her way to make you feel at home, offering water bottles, cookies, and made a delicious breakfast!Boat ride on Dora Canal was amazing!

“Lovely Inn and Innkeeper - Deborah is the new innkeeper, and it is obvious that she is passionate about what she does. She acted as concierge, cook, and innkeeper for us during our short stay, and we felt like we'd made a good friend when we left. The inn is beautiful and the rooms well appointed. We took advantage of a groupon, so the value was fantastic!”
