  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Sue and Bob for sharing their own secrets with!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

We are outside Mesa Verde National Park and 30 min. away from the Durango Train.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

We are on 60+ acres of land – children and dogs enjoy freedom! We have pets who love our guests. Our breakfasts get good reviews. We love our guests!

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

First, there is no city nearby. Mancos is a small town of 1000. This area is a step back in time – right into the Old West – and life moves at a slow pace.

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

Read our reviews on Trip Advisor,, BBOnline, or our web site.

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

The whole 4 Corners is a secret – and our piece is the best part of Colorad. 4 seasons but nothing extreme. Colorado has more scenic byways than any other state.

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

Day 1 Mesa Verde and dinner at the park. Day 2 the train and dinner in Durango. Day 3 Hovenweep which means hiking and dinner in Mancos. Day 4 horseback riding in the forest and cowboy supper on the trail. If you are not a horse person, how about Phil’s World on your mountain bike? Come back to SBL each evening and relax in the hot tub at least once. Day 5 drive the San Juan Skyway.

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

Enjoy our 86 acres of pasture, canyon, mesa top. Relax in a hammock. Enjoy the spectacular sunset.

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

Kennebec at Hesperus; Olio in Mancos; Metate Room in the park.

Any good area guides/websites that travelers could reference?

How many rooms does your inn have?

2 rooms in the lodge, 1 log cabin, 1 guest house with multiple configurations (1bedrm, 2 bedrm, 3 bedrm)

    Do you accept pets?

Pets ok in log cabin and guest house.

  • Activities

You have arrived at the Old West of 1300AD & the vanishing Anasazi culture - and in the Wild West of the American frontier with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Enjoy this step back in time, when life moved at a slower pace. Mancos, Colorado and Sundance Bear Lodge are your base to see and enjoy cliff dwellings, Durango, Cortez, Dolores, the Four Corners and the San Juan Skyway.

Plan your tours of the area  for starters, a day in Mesa Verde Nat'l Park understanding the history of these Ancestral Puebloans and the majesty of their cliff dwellings, a day to ride the Durango-Silverton train, see Durango and Silverton, maybe a jeep ride to visit ghost towns, or some hiking in the national forest nearby. We'll be happy to help you plan your activities.

Return to Sundance Bear after this full day of visiting the archeological centers of Mesa Verde, Hovenweep, the Anasazi Heritage Center, or branching out to tour the San Juan Skyway, hike the La Plata Mountains, fish the Dolores River, horseback riding in the National Forest and relax in the comfort of the lodge living room, soak in the hot tub, or snooze in the hammock.

    Hello Sue and Bob,

Regarding the pictures taken during our trip through the different National Parks of your beautiful country. We share again all the nice things we saw and we will always remember the lovely stay with you. I will put an appreciation at the different sites : trip adviser etc.

I do'nt know what you can do to improve more your B&B , for 4 of us all was perfect : the welcome , the rooms , the breakfast , the surrounding. Unfortunately our schedule took not into account your B&B was worthy a longer stay.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy Safe and Sound New Year. Hearty greetings from Belgium

    Good Morning Bob and Sue,

Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us. We truly enjoyed our visit.   I hope someday to return with my husband! Everything was perfect;the bed, the food, the coffee  and your hospitality. ah, and Morris.

Saturday was a good travel day, watching the kids in costume board the Pumpkin Patch Express in Durango,  lunch in Pagossa Springs where Carlyle and I had stayed 40 some years ago, watching the train in Chama and then , what must be one of the best kept secrets in the USA,  the 100 mile drive  from Chama to Santa Fe.

    Peace, Sheila Richards

Hi there Sue & Bob - and "the never to be forgotten duo" - Chester & Orio,

A few lines to thank you (all) for making our stay with you so memorable. We are now back in Stamford - recovering slowly from jet lag - but with such lovely memories of our visit to Mancos, and Sundance Bear in particular.

Sue, your breakfasts are quite remarkable, and truly set me up for the day….Bob, I enjoyed our various discussions immensely, and learned that despite a few cultural differences - we shared similar views and experiences etc. about so much.

In respect of how best you might improve your services etc. - in all honesty, I don't think that you need to change a thing.

During our relatively short stay at Sundance Bear, we met a number of fellow guests - all of them effused of your hospitality and envied your home and lifestyle etc.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Sundance; and, all-in-all, it was a terrific vacation.  After leaving the lodge we went on for some hiking in Canyonlands and Arches national parks.  They are astonishingly beautiful places and we enjoyed ourselves immensely.  There is much more we would like to see and many more hikes than we could fit into 9 days; so I am confident we will be back.  We wouldn't hesitate to stay at your lodge again if it fits in our plans.

We very much enjoyed meeting you and your husband. The breakfasts were lovely - food and conversation!

    Best wishes,

    Daniel and Carol

I don't think you need to do anything differently!  We had a marvelous if not too short, stay with you and Bob!  I did go on Tripadvisor and do a review for you guys!  I think I told you that Wijbren said yours was his favorite hotel!  We return to Holland on SAturday and I am NOT looking forward to the rain and wind that will be waiting for me there!  Keep up the good work and maybe we will see you again one day!  Best to you and Bob and all the "creatures"!  Carol

    Hi Sue and Bob

Just to say how much we enjoyed our stay with you and wish we could have stayed longer, in fact if other accommodation had not been booked we would have done so. When we left you we spent the day in the Mesa  Verde our second visit but equally rewarding. We blundered on the mileage to our next stop and nearly turned back to you.

Thank you once again, we will always remember you.

    Dear Sue & Bob.

Upon return to Israel it is our  pleasure to write to you our impression of your B&B. It is so happen that we stayed in 12 different B&B during our recent trip to USA at 9/2012. Sundance Bear Lodge is by far the best - both relative to others and in absolute terms. As b&b owners in Israel we can only envy and admire your wonderful place. This excellent b&b together with your hospitality make it unique.

Hope to visit your place again in the future.

    Summer 2012

We are staying in USA for 3 weeks.

It is a wonderfull country, but Astrid and me have a particular mention for the Sundance Bear Lodge. You are so lovable people. Your lodge was so beautifull. You were so friendly and so nice to us. The room was wonderful. Astrid who does not speak English spoke with her hands, and her hands were understood. She shared her impressions with Maurice, this lovable cat, so sweet, so tender who spent the night with us. A wonderful memory. USA is for us an example of perfection. We verified this truth with you.

    Thank you.

For us, come back to USA means come back to Sundance Bear Lodge ! It was great !

    Summer 2012

    Hello Sue,

We are still remembering our very nice stay at you b&b. How are you both ? How are Morris and the other pet residents ?

    Summer 2012

    Sue and Bob,

We want to thank you for our wonderful stay at your guesthouse.  It was nice that my brothers, their wives, my husband and I could all stay at one place.  We all had a great time visiting with each other.  We spent a lot of time on the deck enjoying the beautiful vista while we chatted and had our meals.  Homer, our St. Bernard, also thanks you for accepting him as one of your guests.  He really enjoyed chasing away the rabbits and geckos.

All of us are spreading the word around about Sundance Bear Lodge being one of the most perfect places to stay.

Again, thank you so much for making our stay such a pleasurable memory.  Hopefully, we will be able to come for another visit.

My daughter and I had a wonderful time at your gracious and comfortable inn!  Thank you, we will see you the next time we are down that way.

    Summer 2012

    Hello Sue,

Both my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed out two nights at your cozy cabin. We could have stayed a month.  Thanks so much for your hospitality.  I have already told about 10 people about your beautiful place.

    Best regards,

    "Quiet, friendly"

    David D

Beautifully furnished B&B located between Cortez (Mesa Verde National Park) and Durango (narrow guage railroad to Silverton). Very comfortable, great breakfasts, and hosts Sue and Bob could not have been nicer people to be with.

    "Comfortable and Friendly"

    Richard K

Our stay with Bob and Sue Scott of Sundance Bear Lodge was one of the best experiences we have had in our years of traveling the U.S. It was just a bonus that it was our first family stay in a B&B (we have a just-turned-teen son). The great location in the four-corners area, the funky little town of Mancos, the wonderful breakfasts and conversation, and the quiet solitude of the property  -everything was just about perfect. Get away from it all, or stay connected to the world. Visit the National Parks and Monuments within an easy days road venture, or explore the canyons on the 80+acre Sundance property. While we stayed in the main lodge for four nights, they also have a separate cabin and a guest house if that is more to your liking. In short, everything mentioned in the previous reviews was spot on. Given the opportunity, we will certainly be returning for another visit.

    "Wonderful property and location!"

A friend and i stayed in the SDB 2 bedroom cabin and loved it! Bob and Sue are wonderful, we lacked nothing. The cabin was comfortable, affordable, quiet, and had great views of the Mesa. Highly recommended and would go again in a minute!

The Sundance Bear Lodge is not just a place to stay, but a destination in its self. Go for the ambiance of the lodge, the surroundings, the hospitality of your hosts, Bob and Sue, and the gourmet breakfasts. Whether you go out exploring or stay in, a memorable experience awaits you.

"Little paradise at the four corners"

    Marc B

Kind and helpful hosts, nice room, hearty home-made breakfasts, breathtaking view on Mesa Verde, convenient location not far from the four corners, what else to ask? Dominique and Marc B

    "Relaxed Comfort"

    Everett B
    Norfolk, CT

A relaxed, family atmosphere (two friendly pooches complimenting two most hospitable hosts); fine victuals; a beautiful setting; and the most thorough listing of useful guidance and suggestions encountered in any B&B on our 8,834.6 mile journey around the USA. We recommend Sundance Bear Lodge without hesitation. Sally and Ted Briggs, Norfolk, CT

    "Absolutely Fantastic B&B"

    Michael T

Bob and Sue made our most recent vacation feel like a home away from home. Their hospitality is second to none. I give my highest recommendation to the Sundance Bear Lodge. I will visit it again.
