Historic Gardens"Amid the roses and lavender, it's easy to imagine you're on a country estate."
    - Travel & Leisure, Twenty Great Inns for Fall

The Gardens at MacArthur Place are extraordinary. Filled with original sculptures and fountains, many of the majestic old trees and plantings at MacArthur Place date back more than a century. With over 100 species of trees and filled with colorful and unusual plantings interspersed with meandering paths, our sculpture gardens are a wonderful place to stroll, or relax with a glass of wine or a good book. Our orchard has 12 different kinds of fruit trees, and when in season, you'll find the fruit in pies and other special desserts in our restaurant, Saddles.

    Lifesize Chess Set

Throughout the gardens comfortable benches have been placed, often near one of our interesting fountains or sculptures. All of the sculpture in the gardens are provided by the I. Wolk Gallery in St. Helena and are available for purchase. The hedge rows lining some of the flagstone paths are original to the inn, and were planted by the original owners when Sonoma was a young town. The swimming pool and outdoor whirlpool tub are accessible through the gardens, and are located next to our Spa facilities.

The inn is adjacent to Nathanson Creek, which runs from the hillsides to the north of Sonoma through the town and eventually out to the Bay Delta to the south. The creek provides a natural preserve for a wide range of Sonoma's wildlife.

"Lovely Gardens, details in the rooms and all around restful memories. Well done." ~ The Walkers

"MacArthur Place is where the movie stars stay during the Sonoma Valley Olive Festival, and it has some of the lush, tucked-away, celebrities-in-sunglasses atmosphere you associate with the Hotel Bel-Air. Once a snazzy horse farm, now the resort is a pleasant maze of meandering paths, lavish gardens, white Victorian-style cottages a steak house, and of course a spa." ~ Town & Country Travel

"In the land of wine and exclusive resorts, this spot stands alone" find fans who love the "cozy, rustic country-farmhouse rooms with comfy big beds" (get a suite, it's totally worth it"), "friendly service" and the "serene spa"; go for a ride on the "bikes for guest use", listen to some DVDs wearing your "great robe" or indulge in a "massage in a Japanese-style breezy tent by the pool"; whatever you do, "if you're in Sonoma, you must stay here." ~ ZAGAT 2006 Top U.S. Hotels, Resorts & Spas

"We arrived four princesses and departed four queens. Hail Hedonism!"
~ Susan, Gail, Carol and Kathryn

"A lot of places focus on steaks, but just a few specialize in them. In Sonoma, Saddles offers a choice of grain-fed, Kobe-style, and special grass-fed ribeyes, filet mignons, flatirons, New Yorks, Porterhouse, cowboy steaks and more. It's the Place to go for the very best steak you can get."
    ~ Jeff Cox, Press Democrat

"There is no place more inviting than the historic MacArthur Place country inn in Sonoma. Wallking through the four lush acres of gardens - with sculptures and fountains to be found around nearly every bend - is truly tranquil. Of course, if the gardens don't prove peaceful enough, the aptly named Garden Spa, with nature-inspired treatments like Lavender Dreams and The Rose Garden can do the job. Opt for an al fresco massage in one of the Japanese tea houses."
~ Celebrated Living, American Airline's Premium Class Magazine

"This was our first trip to the Wine Country - we celebrated our 37th anniversary - we loved MacArthur Place so much that we didn't even go touring - there's always the next trip! Simply wonderful."
    ~ Tim and Sandi

"Just off Sonoma's town square, MacArthur Place now hides a colorful, folksy spa. Treatments rely on the fruit of the land: The rosemary in your body polish, rose petals in your facial, and lavender in your aromatherapy soak are often plucked from the garden just as you're settling in."
~ Top 30 Getaways, San Francisco Magazine

"This inn is absolutely heavenly! Very luxurious, spacious, feng shui and relaxing. The staff has been most helpful and professional and the breakfast was always perfect.
I'd rate it an "11" from "1-10". Cheers." ~ Len and Sheri

"California wine country's answer to the steakhouse is located not far from the Sonoma Plaza, in MacArthur Place, an upscale hotel. At Saddles, you can sit inside the pleasantly appointed Barn or on the garden patio. Choose from selections cut to order or a list of steaks and chops, then prepare yourself for serious toppings - carmelized onions, peppercorn sauce, and Cabernet demi-glace - all in huge amounts. Sides are also generous, including potatoes prepared five ways and traditional creamed spinach. For lighter fare, order the market vegetables, they taste Sonoma-grown."
~ Best Steakhouses in the West, Sunset Magazine

"In the heart of Sonoma, just four blocks from the historic plaza, is a renovated garden spot that would give Eden a run for its money. Interspersed among the vibrant flowers, mature trees, fountains, and sculptures are 64 individually apppointed guest rooms and suites, each boasting delicious amenities. The homegrown goodness is infused in many of the Garden Spa's treatments, like Sonoma Olive Oil Body Polish and Red Wine Grapeseed Massage. Savor a steak and martini at Saddles. The atmosphere is so tranquil that you rarely hear a voice above a whisper." ~ 10 Great Getaways, Child Magazine

"Your attention to detail is incredible." ~ Sandra and John

"I would love to spend more time here to enjoy the surroundings and
absorb the peace and serenity and beauty." ~ Louise
