  • Insider's Info

Travelers are always looking for memorable and relaxing experiences. Let’s discover more through the words of our innkeepers. Many thanks to Lawrence Havlick for sharing his own secrets with BBOnline.com!
Why do most travelers stay at your inn?

Most travelers visit us for vacations and celebrations — birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, baby announcements, weddings, etc. Many travelers also visit us for spontaneous romantic getaways.

What are you best known for? What makes your inn unique? What do you love most about your inn?

Our Inn sits on more than an acre of immaculately maintained gardens — indeed, our gardens are part of what steeps our Inn in mystery, romance, and beauty. The Inn itself is a Historical building and also very unique — it is a half-timbered English Tudor that was commissioned by the first elected mayor of Monterey (Mayor Carmel Martin), and remains true to its original structure and splendor.

If someone has never been to your city, what is the #1 reason to come visit?

The number one reason to visit the Monterey Peninsula is to bask in the natural beauty that surrounds us — the Monterey coastline is unlike any other world, and is well worth a visit (or two, or ten :-))!

What’s the best compliment you have ever received about the inn?

The two following quotes sum us up beautifully, and we are so proud to have earned their praise.

“We spent two nights in Monterey for our 20th anniversary and were spoiled with all of the luxury and beauty that this bed and breakfast has to offer. Our room was cozy, clean, and elegantly furnished with fine linens and a gas fireplace that kept us nice and warm during the cool Monterey evenings. The English style garden that surrounds the inn is beautifully manicured and transports you to the Tudor era. The gourmet breakfast was amazing and I especially loved the pre-breakfast basket left at our door filled with biscotti and hot coffee!”

“This was our 1st bed & breakfast as we have been nervous about sacrificing privacy and having to interact with other travelers if we choose not to. Our cottage was separate from the main home and we fell in love with this quaint beautifully styled inn. We stayed here for my wife's birthday weekend for a few nights then drove down to the Santa Barbara Biltmore Four Seasons resort...this place was a notch above our Four Seasons experience.”

What’s the best kept secret about the area?

The best kept secret about the Monterey area may be the numerous vineyards and tasting rooms available just a short distance from the Inn!

If a traveler is staying at your inn for 4 nights, what should he/she do in the area?

There are so many different adventures to enjoy in the area, but to name a few ‘must do’s’, the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, the spectacular scenery of driving the Big Sur coastline, the 17-mile drive and Pebble Beach area, Fisherman’s Wharf and historic Cannery Row. I forgot to mention the wonderful opportunity for kayaking among the sea otters, seals, and sea lions, and so on and so on!

Is there anything within walking distance of your inn?

The Old Monterey Inn sits a few blocks away from Monterey’s historical downtown area. We are conveniently tucked in a residential neighborhood and within walking distance of downtown Monterey’s restaurants, pubs, weekly farmers’ markets, boutique shops, and movie theatres. Less than three quarters of a mile is Fisherman’s Wharf which boasts many excellent seafood restaurants and souvenir shops. Many of our guests also walk to the fabulous Monterey Bay Aquarium which sits only two miles from our door!

What is your favorite restaurant/food in the area?

In Monterey we are fortunate to have many fabulous restaurants! To choose just one would be near impossible! Fandangos, Chart House, Sardine Factory, Montrio Bistro, and Restaurant 1833 (to name a few) are all wonderful for different reasons. Depending on what strikes the fancy each evening, they are all our favorites!

How many rooms does your inn have?

We have a total of ten guest rooms, seven of which are in the main house, and three of which have private garden entrances.

    Do you accept pets?

Two of our outdoor entrance rooms accommodate pets weighing less than 25 pounds for a nightly fee.
