Introduction

The St. Bernard Lodge is a bed and breakfast lodge with inn-like qualities and amenities located in the heart of Northern California 10 miles west of Chester/Lake Almanor on Highway 36. This scenic year-round highway is the dividing line of the Cascade and Sierra Nevada Mountain ranges.
St. Bernard Lodge has been accommodating guests at this location since 1929. It quickly became a welcome stop for weary travelers and guests seeking a hearty meal, cozy room, or a refreshing beverage en route to nearby Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park and Lake Almanor from regions across the United States and Europe. Moreover, we are centrally located on the National Park circuit and thus are an especially popular bed and breakfast (B&B) for those traveling in from Crater Lake National Park, Yosemite National Park, or Redwood National Park.
The rustic warmth of knotty pine interiors and turn of the century decor will endear you to the charm of St. Bernard Lodge as so many others have enjoyed over the years. A favorite spot to relax is the deck overlooking the trout pond.
The hiker will appreciate Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park nearby with over 100 miles of trails, lakes, waterfalls and the Lassen Peak plug dome. Nightly or weekly horse boarding is available to our equestrian friends and guests. Miles of pristine riding trails are accessible from our lodge. Additionally, The Pacific Crest Trail, which runs from Mexico to Canada, is just over a mile away from our Lodge. During the snow season, cross country and snowmobile trails are also accessible from the Lodge.
If you’re traveling with a group of friends, colleagues or family members or are searching for that perfectly quaint, back-to-nature, non-hotel experience for family reunions, friendly get-togethers, club or organization meetings or any other type of special event, our vacation rental plan will suit you perfectly. We offer very affordable group rates for lodging on the upstairs floor as well as affordable meal rates that include the convenience of meal planning, preparation and cooking.
Come hide away at our truly distinctive bed and breakfast lodge and inn!
Typical of a bed and breakfast inn layout, our rustic lodge is comprised of seven private sleeping quarters which are located upstairs. As you ascend the staircase you experience a sensation of stepping back in time a century or so ago, reminiscent of a simpler, unhurried era. The feeling of old-world charm can be felt in each of our vintage continental style rooms. The upstairs has 7 rooms and can sleep up to 22 guests.

The St. Bernard Lodge is a rustic bed and breakfast (B&B) inn located only 20 minutes from Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park and 15 minutes from Lake Almanor. We are and have been, since 1929 a central lodging and resting spot for National Park travelers. Many of our guests arrive by car but many come wanting to pitch a tent in the nearby campgrounds, eat at our renowned restaurant and enjoy a nightcap in our tavern. But many travelers arrive with RV’s and with horses that require boarding. Horseback riding is available at Lassen Volcanic National Park. St. Bernard Lodge provides overnight boarding for both rider and horse!
Some of the horseback riding trails available in the area include:- Caribou Wilderness with trails starting at Hay Meadows;
- Bizz Johnson Trail, an 18 mile segment, that runs along the Susan River from Westwood to Susanville. There are eleven bridges and two tunnels which are passable on horseback. If you prefer, the tunnels can be avoided with alternate riverside routes.
- The Pacific Crest Trail which is only 1.4 mile from the lodge. You can ride in either direction. Heading south you cross Soldiers Meadow and climb Carter Mountain. Traveling north about 7 miles you end up at Stover Springs which is used as a staging area for endurance rides each year.
Horses are allowed on all designated trails in the park except:
- Manzanita Lake Trail, Lassen Peak Trail, a portion of Cinder Cone Trail, Reflection Lake Trail, Bumpass Hell Trail and trails within Devil’s Kitchen and Sulphur Works.
Some conditions of horseback riding in the Park are:
- Horses are not permitted to travel cross-country while in the park;
- Prohibited to ride or stake animals in picnic areas or campgrounds;
- Stock parties camping overnight are restricted to one of the designated sites at Summit Lake;
- Corral & Butte Lake Hitching Posts or Juniper Lake Corral.
For guided horseback rides reservations need to be made through Drakesbad Guest Ranch. Many equestrians and horse associations use our pasture and stables for local events, as a base camp for wilderness horseback camping, or just to use the neighboring riding trails. Speaking of trails, there are hundreds of miles of wonderful trails that beg to be explored. So, bring your favorite horse and saddle. Tavern
Read MoreThe St. Bernard Lodge is a rustic bed and breakfast (B&B) inn located only 20 minutes from Mount Lassen Volcanic National Park and is a central lodging spot for travelers exploring the National Park circuit.
St. Bernard Lodge has 7 distinctly appointed rooms – all available to groups and families – as well as creative and sumptuous breakfast, lunch and dinner menus in our restaurant that appeal to all appetites.
Like the rest of our bed and breakfast Lodge and restaurant, stepping into our tavern will give you the sensation of being in an old, turn-of-the-century, European tavern. At our tavern, everyone is your friend. Your experience will be warm, friendly and familiar, yet different.
If you close your eyes and let your imagination wander a bit you might be able to hear faint laughter and really interesting stories being told. No, the place is not haunted, but it does have a colorful history having been built in 1929. There have been many a wild tale and a lot of jokes shared across the bar. Lots of good times and memories permeate the walls. If they could only talk they would keep you here for days and weeks.
While relaxing in the tavern many guests challenge each other to a game of pool on our custom made Olhausen pool table.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner or just a snack can be served to you in the tavern. We have a full bar stocked with your favorite liquors and, of course, your favorite beers. We also offer a fine selection of wines.
There is a television to watch "the game" if you desire, or play a game of pool on our new Olhausen pool table, darts, cribbage and many other games at hand. There are many other creature comforts that you are welcome to use and enjoy. You will feel right at home here and will have a difficult time wanting to leave, so allow for an extra hour or two!
At St. Bernard Lodge, you are amongst friends.
