A Brilliant Evening at the Opera 28 Jun 2015, 1:38 pm

Opera In The Ozarks is fabulous, as always!
Just attended a performance of Verdi’s La Traviata, one of the operas in repertoire being performed at Inspiration Point Fine Arts Center, Hwy 62, 15 minutes outside Eureka Springs, AR.  Opera In The Ozarks (OIO), with its new General Director Nancy Preis,  offers mentoring, classes and training for dozens of younger singers who audition from around the world . This season, they have come from five continents to be a part of the month-long program which takes place each summer and is now in its 65th year.  The orchestra, under the baton of Artistic Director Thomas Cockrell,  always features first-class instrumentalists who have auditioned as well from all corners of the globe and are drawn from our nation’s top schools of music.  The other two operas to be enjoyed this season at OIO are Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffman and Rossini’s Cenerentola (Cinderella) which we were fortunate to see last winter in Barcelona, Spain. This season runs from June 19 to July 17.For tickets and info, go to www.opera.org
In the photo below, that’s Cliff Cottage Inn’s innkeeper on the right in a production of “Italian Woman In Algiers” by the Pennsylvania Opera Company many moons ago when she performed with this company, the Philadelphia Opera and the San Francisco Opera. (They always cast her as either the maid to the leading lady or one of the more colorful “ladies of the night.”) In the center is the “Italian Woman”, Ms. Jones, who, by strange coincidence,  years before had been one of the young singers at Opera In The Ozarks and then went on to sing with NY City Opera and other companies!  When Sandra eventually got to Eureka Springs, it had been over a dozen years since she left the world of opera and spent seven years sailing my hot pink boat in the Pacific. At the first performance she attended of OIO, she  thought she recognized the director, Carroll Freeman, also a former OIO participant who then went on to make his adult singing debut with the NY City Opera as Alfredo in Traviata.  He then performed with many other companies around the world. Sure enough, he had also performed the role of Mustafa in that Pennsylvania Opera production of Italian Woman!

P.S. Mary Bander, who gave a dazzling performance as Violetta last night, is a name to watch. She is a rising star in opera and we  should be seeing more of her in the near future at the major opera venues.

Memorial Day, Eureka Springs, 2015 25 May 2015, 5:13 pm

Eureka Springs’ annual Memorial Day parade was hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No.36. An Army color guard lead the parade from the Library to the City Hall, followed by an Army band performing traditional marches. The parade also featured one of our local horse-drawn carriages, and several members of the City Council resplendent in a vintage Lincoln convertible. A number of bikers also participated in this year’s parade, with several displaying outsized American and Military Service flags streaming from their rear bumpers.

Our guests were able to enjoy the festivities from their private front porches. Innkeeper Carl remembered with gratitude the service of his father in the United State Navy during WWII, and Innkeeper Sandra sent up a silent thanks to her uncle who served with the Seabees at Imo Jima, and her twin brother who served three years in Vietnam.  We send out thanks to all those who served in the past and who are serving today to defend our freedom and liberty!

Caving 15 May 2015, 12:06 pm

Innkeeper Sandra in front of War Eagle Cave

Innkeeper Sandra in front of War Eagle Cave

Innkeeper Sandra and your blogger just visited War Eagle Cavern, just a short jaunt from Cliff Cottage Inn. We have visited several major caverns over the past year or so and were very impressed with War Eagle. With many passages connecting large chambers, the cavern extends for a considerable distance beneath the mountain which lies beside Beaver Lake. A natural aquifer runs through the cavern system and it was here that the Native Americans often camped. Cherokee and Osage at various times called this cave home, and their cooking fires left still-visible traces in the large Council Chamber near the entrance. The cave is also home to several species of bats and SAndra and I were able to see some of them “up close and personal” as we traversed the chambers. Our guide was very knowledgeable and regaled us with stories of when Jesse James and his brother took refuge in the cave, as well as tales of a moonshiner family that successfully evaded the “revenooers” for most of Prohibition.

Come stay with us at Cliff Cottage Inn and you’ll be a short, very scenic drive from War Eagle Cavern. It’s a great way to enjoy the beauty of the Ozarks, as you will wind through the beautiful mountains with panoramic views of the mountains and Beaver Lake laid out before you. And when the day is over, you can soak your weariness away in your suite’s two-person Jacuzzi and enjoy a complimentary bottle of white wine or Champagne, chilled and waiting for you in your fridge. And, of course, the Inn’s elf will deliver a full gourmet breakfast right to your door each morning of your stay. Give us a call and reserve your suite or hot-tub-equipped cottage today – 479-253-7409 – orl visit us at www.cliffcottage.com.

Zipline Over the Ozarks 21 Apr 2015, 3:23 pm

Last weekend, while our 10-year old granddaughter was visiitng, we decided to do the Ozark Mountains Zipline adventure. It was an absolute blast!! The guides were terrific, helping us harness up at the office before proceeding by short bus ride to the Zipline start point.  There our guides went over the important safety procedures and signals. We were shown how to launch ourselves (legs straight out in front at all times), how to sit comfortably in the harness and how to use the all-important brake cog that slows you at the approach to the next platform. All together, there are ten stages to the zipline, beginning with a very moderate and short descent, close to the ground.  This easy first stage allows even older folks like innkeeper Sandra and me to become acclimated to the process and to practice the safety and stopping procedures in a very secure and comfortable environment. As we moved from platform to platform, the descents gradually grew longer and steeper.

The highest and longest traverse is about 200 feet above ground and spans 1800 feet, so it is exhilarating, to say the least! Our granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed the experience and Sandra and I can’t say enough good things about the wonderful staff and how much fun we had flying over the magnificent hardwood forest that is so much a part of the Eureka Springs landscape.

“This Place was a Dream”: 9 Apr 2015, 9:52 am

Here’s a review from TripAdvisor that Cliff Cottage Inn just received. We thought it would be fun to share this with all our future and past guests. We love reviews like this – it makes everything so very worthwhile! Thank You!!

“Perfect spot for relaxation, ease of a leisurely stroll into town, and an appreciation of the Victorian aesthetic.”

This place was a dream. We stayed in the Emily Dickinson suite which consisted of a lovely bedroom, a huge bathroom with a deep whirlpool tub, and a beautiful solarium. The bed was comfortable, the surroundings luxurious, and the solarium afforded extra room for relaxing, reading, or just enjoying coffee while listening to the fountain. The owners were lovely people who painstakingly planned every detail of the experience, and although everything was lovely, THEY were the stars of the show. Every single morning, a gourmet breakfast for two was brought on a silver platter, and you can guess how delicious it was by how many travelers posted photos of the the meals. To give you an example of one of the breakfasts: The first meal consisted of a Lemon Souffle, pork loin glazed with a champagne reduction, fresh fruit, and a breakfast cake in the shape of a butterfly (complete with edible sugar paint), and freshly squeezed juice.Although wonderful hosts, the couple who owned it were very helpful on restaurant suggestions, etc., while being completely unobtrusive. My husband and I will absolutely be frequent return guests. Five stars!
