Fall Colors Are Coming to Eureka Springs 27 Sep 2015, 9:58 am

Sitting here on the Inn’s front porch, we are beginning to see a hint of Fall colors on the gorgeous hardwood trees that surround Cliff Cottage. Across the hollow, the trees are just beginning to turn towards their autumnal rainbow of hues, and the mornings are feeling just that little bit cooler and crisper, indicating that Fall is on its way. Autumn here in the Ozark Mountains is one of the visually most spectacular times of the year. Our magical little village is blessed with an abundance of the trees that make us a top competitor with New England for “Most Glorious Fall Colors”.
Be sure and book your suite for Eureka Springs’ Fall color display. You’ll enjoy the autumnal scene from your private porch, deck or balcony as you enjoy sipping the complimentary Champagne or white wine the elf has slipped into your mini-fridge. Call us today and get ready for one of Nature’s great shows!

Fish Are Jump’n and the Autumn is Nigh 20 Sep 2015, 11:13 am

Just got back from Beaver Lake. The Stripers are biting down deep (30 feet or so) and within about a mile of Beaver Dam.  As the water begins to cool with the approach of Fall, the bass will be moving higher. Some can even be caught now near the top early in the day, before the sun heats things up too much and some anglers have reported success running lures down around the 12-foot depth as the water warms towards mid-day.There has been some good trout fishing also in the cooler water up from Beaver Lake closer to the dam.Crappie fishing has been a bit slow, but some have been caught down in the sunken brush.

Plan a Fall fishing trip now and reserve your suite here at Cliff Cottage Inn. We’ll point you to the best fishing guides and Innkeeper Sandra knows some great “secret” fishing spots she can tell you about.

A Brilliant Evening at the Opera 28 Jun 2015, 1:38 pm

Opera In The Ozarks is fabulous, as always!
Just attended a performance of Verdi’s La Traviata, one of the operas in repertoire being performed at Inspiration Point Fine Arts Center, Hwy 62, 15 minutes outside Eureka Springs, AR.  Opera In The Ozarks (OIO), with its new General Director Nancy Preis,  offers mentoring, classes and training for dozens of younger singers who audition from around the world . This season, they have come from five continents to be a part of the month-long program which takes place each summer and is now in its 65th year.  The orchestra, under the baton of Artistic Director Thomas Cockrell,  always features first-class instrumentalists who have auditioned as well from all corners of the globe and are drawn from our nation’s top schools of music.  The other two operas to be enjoyed this season at OIO are Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffman and Rossini’s Cenerentola (Cinderella) which we were fortunate to see last winter in Barcelona, Spain. This season runs from June 19 to July 17.For tickets and info, go to
In the photo below, that’s Cliff Cottage Inn’s innkeeper on the right in a production of “Italian Woman In Algiers” by the Pennsylvania Opera Company many moons ago when she performed with this company, the Philadelphia Opera and the San Francisco Opera. (They always cast her as either the maid to the leading lady or one of the more colorful “ladies of the night.”) In the center is the “Italian Woman”, Ms. Jones, who, by strange coincidence,  years before had been one of the young singers at Opera In The Ozarks and then went on to sing with NY City Opera and other companies!  When Sandra eventually got to Eureka Springs, it had been over a dozen years since she left the world of opera and spent seven years sailing my hot pink boat in the Pacific. At the first performance she attended of OIO, she  thought she recognized the director, Carroll Freeman, also a former OIO participant who then went on to make his adult singing debut with the NY City Opera as Alfredo in Traviata.  He then performed with many other companies around the world. Sure enough, he had also performed the role of Mustafa in that Pennsylvania Opera production of Italian Woman!
P.S. Mary Bander, who gave a dazzling performance as Violetta last night, is a name to watch. She is a rising star in opera and we  should be seeing more of her in the near future at the major opera venues.

Memorial Day, Eureka Springs, 2015 25 May 2015, 5:13 pm

Eureka Springs’ annual Memorial Day parade was hosted by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No.36. An Army color guard lead the parade from the Library to the City Hall, followed by an Army band performing traditional marches. The parade also featured one of our local horse-drawn carriages, and several members of the City Council resplendent in a vintage Lincoln convertible. A number of bikers also participated in this year’s parade, with several displaying outsized American and Military Service flags streaming from their rear bumpers.

Our guests were able to enjoy the festivities from their private front porches. Innkeeper Carl remembered with gratitude the service of his father in the United State Navy during WWII, and Innkeeper Sandra sent up a silent thanks to her uncle who served with the Seabees at Imo Jima, and her twin brother who served three years in Vietnam.  We send out thanks to all those who served in the past and who are serving today to defend our freedom and liberty!
