Catch the SUP wave that is sweeping the country.  SUP....Stand up paddle boarding is a new fun way to enjoy the water and get a workout!  SUP can deliver a strong core workout on inland lakes or in the ocean.  Paddle boards are easy to use and are light enough that they do not require two people to load and launch.  Paddle boards trace their roots to Hawaiian sport of paddle surfing on Waikiki beach.   Paddle boards are available in a variety of styles and price ranges and are propelled by a single blade, long handled paddle.  Paddle boarders have been seen on Smith Lake accompanied by man's best friend on the front of the board.

Fly fishing for Rainbows anytime of year in Alabama!  Last weekend we fly fished below the dam at Smith Lake.  Got a guide and all gear from Riverside Fly Shop on Hwy 69.  Trout like cold water and Alabama doesn't have much!  One exception is the water coming from the bottom of Smith Lake - a constant 49 degrees F!!!  Year round!  Trout are about the only fish that can thrive in water that cold.  The trout are stocked monthly and there are a good number of fly fishing aficionados who take take advantage of this unique opportunity (for Alabama).  The real occasion was my Grandson's thirteenth birthday and he won the competition with 6 fish caught.  His father and I had to settle for a couple apiece.  For anyone who hasn't tried it, there is something to the relaxing rhythm of a casting a fly line.  Brandon at Riverside will provide everything including casting lessons.  Better still, come stay with us at the B&B and we'll make the arrangements for you.  Great FUN.

Smith Lake is the cleanest lake in Alabama!  Last year Smith Lake was certified as the cleanest lake in AL in an annual report to Congress.  How do we know?  Water quality data entered in the Alabama Water Watch database of water test results (http://www.alabamawaterwatch.org/).  Smith Lake has the highest number of volunteer testers of any location in Alabama - over 50 at last count!  These volunteers check the water chemistry weekly and report to data to a central database.  Data trends identify problems and show where action is needed.  Volunteer groups develop action plans in conjunction with Smith Lake stakeholders,  Check out Alabama Water Watch.     Jim & Alex Cox – Living our dream on Smith Lake while introducing our friends and guests to the lake lifestyle.

Breakfast today for Valentine guests was black forest waffles (chocolate) topped with raspberry syrup and whipped cream.   Fresh fruit parfait, scrambled eggs, applewood bacon, orange juice and coffee completed this romantic meal served in their suite.  Outside the weather is chilly, but inside the suites are warm and toasty.

High Speed Internet Access.......Magic words to being connected.  We have a new service - Smith Lake Broadband; fast and reliable over the air broadband internet access.  We now have a high speed Wi-Fi connection to the rest of the world at the B&B.  Smith Lake is spread out and sparsely populated (we like that); but, DSL lines are few and far between (don't like).  AT&T apparently has decided not to add DSL (only a few on the lake have it), so the choice was Satellite (Hughes or Wildblue) or internet access over power lines if you happened to have Cullman Electric power - Cullman electric is dropping their service next month.  Greg Kiker and his wife Tina returned to Smith Lake in 2006; saw a need and an opportunity, and began Smith Lake Broadband.  He is building towers around the lake that provide line of sight connections to a small antennae mounted on your house.  He has covered only a portion of the lake so far; but, he is expanding his network constantly to serve new areas.  Now is it possible for a few more folks to live in paradise and work online.

Happy New Year from Smith Lake.  What a beautiful beginning to the year!  The weather has been gorgeous.  Warm days, mostly clear nights and rain to keep the lake full.  We did get a little wind storm which pushed our dock against the rock bank; but the damage was minimal.  The water is quiet now, with the full moon reflected in the still water surface.  We know winter is far from over; but we are enjoying the warm days while we can.

Alex and I have been living our dream as bed and breakfast owners on Lewis Smith Lake, in Crane Hill, Alabama.  We will be blogging soon as to the beauty of the area and all that there is to do here. Stay tuned!
