Introduction

Roan Mountain Bed and Breakfast is a rambling, converted log home on 121 acres of rugged mountainside. Sit on the front porch, gaze across Doe River, and take in the beauty of the Appalachians. Relax on the back porch, keeping an eye peeled for deer and rabbits at close of day. Sit and read in our Chestnut Orchard. Hike one of the trails above the house or wade in a river at the bottom of the hill. Enjoy the nearby Western North Carolina High Country. Take in a race at Bristol International Speedway, enjoy a winter holiday at Beech or Sugar Mountain Ski Resorts, or drive to the top of "The Roan," one of the most magnificent natural wonders in eastern America. Roan Mountain Bed and Breakfast offers the choice of 4 rooms, each with their own rustic charm and individual histories, but all with the peaceful surroundings and natural beauty of the East Tennessee mountains.

The Rose Room

Large, handicapped-accessible room on the ground floor, overlooking the front lawn, lane, river, and mountains. Private bath with shower, television, and sofa. King Bed.

The Cloudland Room

Charming, upstairs room with slanted ceiling with private bath and shower, overlooking the back lawn, chestnut orchard, and mountain. Private balcony. Queen size bed. This room can sleep 3 persons.

The Governor's Room

Large room with television. This is the room Lamar Alexander stayed in during his first campaign as governor of Tennessee. Two twin beds sit side by side to make a King Size bed. This room can have a private bath if requested as long as the B&B is not too booked.

The Rhododendron Room

Upstairs room with private balcony. One double bed and one three-quarters bed. Has private access to a 1/2 bath off the utility room, but is across the house from the main bath used for showering. This room can sleep up to 3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children.

The Iris Room

Small, cozy corner bedroom overlooking the back lawn. Very quiet and comfortable. Double bed with rocking chair, night stand, and lamp. Near the hall bathroom.

Rate & Reservation Information
  • Our rooms range in price from $75 to $195 per night.
  • Our rates are based on room occupancies of two persons.
  • Additional persons will be $10 extra per night.
  • Check In: Between 3 and 6 pm Eastern unless otherwise arranged.
  • Check Out: By 10:30 am Eastern unless otherwise arranged.
  • Due to the high volume of rentals on race weekends we are often full. If this is the case please contact us and we may be able to help you book a room at a nearby home.
  • There is a three night minimum reservation requirement on race weekends.
  • Cancellations: We require a 48 hour notice of cancellation or the first night's stay + tax will be charged.

East Tennessee Attractions
  • The "Roan" - Roan Mountain, rising to 6,285 feet, features the largest natural garden of Catawba rhododendron in the world. Ten miles of Grassy Balds, the longest anywhere in the world, stretch from Carver's Gap on the Roan to Big Hump Mountain.
  • Roan Mountain State Park is a 2000-acre park on the slopes of Roan Mountain (elevation 3,000 feet) offering swimming, fishing, hiking, and picnicking. Over 180 species of wildflowers have been identified.
  • The Appalachian Trail - The closest trail head is at Carver's Gap which climbs up the mountain toward the Rhododendron Gardens where you may choose between a 1/3-mile loop or a longer path. The Cloudland trail is a moderate 1.2 mile hike from the end of the Cloudland parking area to Roan High Bluff overlook.
  • Doe River Covered Bridge - 15 miles away in Elizabethton - built in 1882, this white clapboard covered bridge is still in use today, surrounded by a park, walking trails, and plenty of ducks. The Covered Bridge was designed by Col. Thomas E. Matson, a civil engineer who designed Tweetsie Railroad and New York City's elevated railroad system. It was built at a cost of $3000 and spans the river for 134 feet. For more information, visit www.tourelizabethton.com.
  • Downtown Elizabethon antique shops - The historic district of Elizabethton is lined with antique and craft stores, including: The Duck Crossing Antique Mall covering four floors with over 40 dealers; The Merry-Mary Shop which also serves lunch daily; The Picket Fence, a two-level mall; Antiques on Elk with two floors of shopping; The Maze Emporium; Rebel Craftsman; and Doe River Artisans Gallery.
  • Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area - site of Fort Watauga, where the first majority-rule system of American democratic government was established in 1772. Under the leadership of Chairman John Carter, it became the first permanent American settlement outside the original thirteen colonies. It was here that the Overmountain Men gathered in September, 1780, before their march to the battle of Kings Mountain. Visit the reconstruction of Fort Watauga and the adjacent museum. "The Wataugans," a two-act outdoor drama depicting the early settlement of Northeast Tennessee is performed on the last three weekends of July.
