Introduction
Tucked in the shadow of English Mountain, Penny Walk Bed and Breakfast is a gateway to the Smoky Mountains recreational activities or a destination in itself. Located on the quiet lake side of the mountains, Penny Walk is a world away from noise and hustle. Relax on the patio or screen porch with a cool drink, or wander the wooded paths after a day of sightseeing, boating, or business. In historic Dandridge, Tennessee, we are just a few miles off I-40 at exit 412.
The Story of the Penny Walk
When I was a young girl scout in Chicago, my troop frequently took penny walks to earn hiking badges. The flip of a penny at any city block or intersection determined whether we would turn right or left. After exploring new neighborhoods and parks, we would always end up where we started! When our own children were young, weekend afternoons often involved penny drives through the country or a nearby city. We might have discovered an exhibition on levers and pulleys at a museum, just in time for a school report. We might have marveled at the long golden rows of soy beans near harvest time. As empty nesters we have continued our penny drives and love to explore the smaller towns - the kind with rich traditions, corner cafes and interesting bits of history. We hope that when you take your first "penny walk" through Tennessee, you find your way to Dandridge - the quiet lakeside of the Smokies. - MaryAlice
Bill & Mary Alice Schmitt, Innkeepers
My wife and I are the owners and your hosts at Penny Walk Bed and Breakfast. Mary Alice is a retired nurse executive and I'm a retired Master Sergeant with the Illinois State Police. We came to Tennessee to fulfill our dream of running a bed and breakfast. We found both wonderful people and a beautiful town in Dandridge. Having both worked in people oriented professions, we enjoy meeting new and interesting travelers and sharing with them our appreciation of East Tennessee. We'd love to have you visit. - Bill
