Treat someone you love to a weekend of
romance with specially decorated rooms, candlelit whirlpool baths while
romantic music plays, flower and fruit baskets, romantic dinners a deux
beside the roaring fireplace, champagne or sparkling cider and gourmet
chocolates.
GOLFING IN THE MOUNTAINS
Watch the ball float off the high tee and fly down the course to roll
slowly on the fairway. That is, if you can take your eyes from the
beauty of the mountains surrounding the course! 3 courses within no
more than 40 minutes of the Inn. Choose one, or play all three.
Greens fees run from $20.00-$50.00.
HIKING THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL
Long, short, gentle or challenging - sections of the world famous 2,155
mile Appalachian Trail are within 20 minutes of the Iron Mountain Inn.
Let us drop you off at one end and pick you up at the other. Day
hikes, or, take your backpack, tent and food for three days hiking
along the Iron Mountain Ridge from Mountain City to Watauga Dam. For a
challenging day hike, climb up to the Trail from behind Butler (about 3
1/2 hours), then a 10 minute walk along the Trail to one of the AT huts
where you can have a picnic before starting back down (about 1 1/2
hours). Foot soaks will be available back at the Inn! Also, don't
forget, the whirlpool to soothe your aching muscles.
But you may prefer to take the Laurel Creek trail to see the beautiful
Laurel Creek Falls. Just don't get wet crossing them! This trail is a
moderately easy one. It can be done before lunch leaving time for a
swim in Watauga Lake.
And then there is the section which skirts the lower edge of Watauga
Lake. Start at Watauga Dam and finish at the "swimming hole" on the
Lake.
FLY FISHING
Some of the best year round fly fishing in the country is right here in
Johnson and Carter Counties. Let us share some of the best spots and
when you come home with the brown trout, the walleyes or the catfish,
let us cook it for you (after YOU scale and get it ready for cooking).
Wade in or float in, we know the guides who know the waters where you
can catch the trophy fish.
Or rent a fishing boat and troll on Watauga Lake. Tales of fish big
enough to eat a man are told by divers who've explored the bottom of
the Lake. Will you be the one to make that "fish story" come
true?
WHITE WATER RAFTING and KAYAKING
We can arrange rafting trips from Class I to Class V - 3 hours to all
day on the water. The Nolichucky or the New River. Or for a real
challenge, run the Breaks with a gradient of up to 200ft/mile creating
the most intense, technical and challenging commercially rafted
whitewater in the Eastern US. Experienced rafters only for this one!
One person inflatable kayak trips are less challenging, but no less
exciting. Let us make your heart stop, whether from the beauty of the
river or the challenge of the water.
HELICOPTER OR FIXED WING SIGHTSEEING TRIPS
Enjoy fall or spring in the mountains - from above them! Let us
arrange a sightseeing trip by air! A unique way to enjoy the grandeur
of "the quiet corner" of Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.
HORSEBACK RIDING
Bring your own - we have 125 miles of marked trails nearby and stabling available. $25.00 per person for the trail ride - $5.00 per person
to use the trails and $10.00 per horse per night for stabling (includes
hay). Or rent a gentle Belgian for a one hour trail ride among
the mountains. Reservations required and limited availability.
All of the above are available any time but RESERVATIONS ARE A MUST!.
