The following description of Avery Trace are excerpts taken from an article in the Sumner County Reference Handbook written by Christine Russell.. Avery Trace - the foot trail followed by many of the earliest settlers into Middle Tennessee. The Trace ran from Clinch Mountain in East Tennessee to French Lick (Nashville), then a small settlement on the Cumberland River. The Trace passed through the southern portion of Sumner County near Bledsoe's Lick (Castalian Springs) before turning south into Davidson County. Members of the Jackson County Historical Society are attempting to identify and mark the entire Trace in time for Tennessee's bicentennial in 1996. Peter Avery blazed the trail which was opened to foot traffic in 1788, some years before the more widely-known Natchez Trace from Nashville to Natchez, MS. He is said to have followed a war path frequently used by the Cherokees.
