The Area
The village of Granville was settled in 1799 near the Cumberland River on the banks of Martin's Creek. It is located in southwestern Jackson County near the Smith and Putnam County lines.
From the early 1800's Granville was a riverboat town with a major agricultural focus. It was incorporated in 1837 and became a booming town with stores, banks, hotels, doctor's office, pharmacy, blacksmith, funeral home, churches, and private and public schools.
In 1972, Granville became a lakeside community where Cordell Hull Lake was developed on the Cumberland River. Since that time, it has become a recreational area for fishing, boating, swimming, camping, and picnicking.
