Battle of Franklin Battlefield Sites
Williamson County experienced significant, dramatic events during the Civil War, in the Battle of Franklin. Winstead Hill, located south of the Carter House on Columbia Avenue, was the vantage point from which General John Bell Hood observed his advancing Confederate troops; Fort Granger, built in 1862 by Union troops and accessible from Franklin's Pinkerton Park, provides spectacular views of Franklin; and Roper's Knob, located just to the north of Downtown Franklin, was a major signaling post.
