45 short minutes and 3 long centuries from downtown Charleston!
The present sprawling 40 room mansion is the result of renovations and additions made in 1929 by U.S. Senator John S. Frelinghugsen of New Jersey who used the property as a hunting lodge.
The formal gardens (established around 1795) were restored and enhanced in the 1930s according to a design by noted landscape architect Loutrell Briggs of New York and Charleston.
After falling into ruins the house and gardens were restored in 1987 as an inn. Today the old homestead totals 285 of original 1790 acres.
An experimental Carolina Gold rice paddy overlooks the expanse of old rice...
... fields which are now flooded and home to abundant fish and wildlife.

"Chico" - Our Donkey
Under the canopy of ancient moss-draped live oaks, amidst camellias 200 years old and in the company of a mysterious spirit who rhythmically rocks in an old rocking chair, time seems to stand still at Rice Hope.
Conveniently located in the middle of nowhere on the Cooper River...
over yonder 'tween Meekin Abbey and Hell Hole Swamp!
