Introduction

This significant Georgian house was built circa 1770 by the wealthy French Huguenot planter Philip Porcher. The house is located in the heart of the Historic District and faces two of Charleston's most beautiful churches.

The house is only a block away from the antique district and is within easy walking distance of numerous fine restaurants and shops as well as house museums and other attractions.

In 1997 the ground floor of the house was renovated for guest quarters. Handsome Georgian revival oak paneling from the demolished executive offices of the Pennsylvania Railroad in Pittsburgh was installed and the apartment was attractively furnished with eighteenth century engravings and period antiques. The apartment, which consists of the entire ground floor with 5 rooms, is rented as a unit to only one party (with 2 bedrooms the apartment can accommodate up to 4 guests).

Many of our guests have complimented the privacy and tranquility associated with the house and have expressed appreciation of the civilized and soothing interior with its numerous good books, music, and cozy environment.

At the Philip Porcher House, one of America's most beautiful and delightful little cities is immediately at hand; a treasure trove of sophisticated architecture with the vibrancy of a larger urban center.
