THE PORCH:
The porch at Retreat on Main is set apart by its very high ceiling and a
large piece of the Jackson family history. When we purchased the house,
the Jackson family blessed us by leaving a joggling board that is over 100
years old. 100 years old in 2006, Harriet Jackson recalls her mother
"joggling the children to sleep".
The board has always been in their family and will remain on the porch in
honor of the Jackson family. Joggling boards are commonly seen on the
porches of plantation homes, as well as S.C. low country touring homes.
It is also known as a romantic 'courting board'. you can learn more about
this special Southern form of relaxation during your stay.
THE GARDENS AT RETREAT ON MAIN:
In the front, guests will find resting benches under an old draping
magnolia. Azalea's front the porch and a huge camelia tree provides a
privacy screen. The rear grounds are lush with a broad variety of
trees, foliage, and perennial, annual and bulb plantings. A camellia tree
garden, planted many years ago, shares a beautiful sampling of what is
considered to be the most difficult flower to paint.
Winding gravel walks lead to both cottages and to the Main House. A
fountain, birdbaths, a picnic area and benches are found throughout this
peaceful woodland garden.
