Travel information about South Carolina

South Carolina has a rich history and beautiful sites to offer its visitors. Fort Sumter was the location of the first engagement of the American Civil War in 1861 and South Carolina was the first state to withdraw from the Union prior to the Civil War. The largest organized Native American nation remaining in South Carolina is the PeeDee, with a population of about 2500 in four northeastern counties. Legend has it that at a place called Table Rock State Park in the Blue Ridge Mountains, a gigantic Native American chieftain dined at the "table" high above ordinary mortals. Music has always been an important part of life in South Carolina as evidenced by the emergence of America's first symphony orchestra organized in 1767 by the Saint Cecilia Society. South Carolina is the second largest producer of juicy, tasty peaches. In 1830, the first U.S. Steam locomotive built for railroad use was put into service in the state. Stay in a Charleston South Carolina inn or consider a romantic b&b on the Carolina coast.
