Above and Beyond
Decorated with memorabilia from Newport's postwar era (1947-1975), which saw Jacqueline Bouvier wed JFK, Doris Duke rescue 83 colonial homes and the Preservation Society save the city's most architecturally important mansions.
A dramatic spiral stairway entry foyer leads you up from the second floor to the Above and Beyond Deluxe Suite on the third floor -- the entire third floor. You enter Above through a British library. Surrounding you on all sides is an exquisite collection of hundreds of historic books, framed in rich mahogany paneling. These so-called "faux" books are works of art in themselves, gilded and handcrafted by artisans from the Cotswolds in England, using the rare originals found in historic antiquarian collections and European libraries.
The library is washed in a warm, recessed lighting system that you can set to match your mood, from serious reading to romance. There is a marble-surrounded gas fireplace and above it, concealed by a set of arched mirrors, a media center with TV, VCR, CD and iPod enabled sound system. Stereo speakers are built-in throughout the Above and Beyond with individual room controls. But the media center is only the first of several "concealed" surprises.
Reading And Relaxing - There are two comfortable sitting areas in the library -- one by the fireplace and the other, nestled away on the other side of the room by one of the dormer windows. The library also serves as the main entry foyer to the 5 other rooms -- both the obvious ones and the hidden ones. The obvious ones have raised panel doorways... the hidden ones are behind the books.
Two Sleeping Chambers - Above and Beyond features 2 bedrooms luxuriously outfitted with Mascioni Dreamcotton sheets, the finest available from Italy's renowned linen design house. The master bedroom has a king-size, sleigh bed and sitting area with sofa and chair. From the window are views of historic downtown Newport and the distant harbor. The second bedroom also has a king-size bed or can be set up with twin beds, depending on your traveling needs. Each room is richly appointed with antiques and artwork. Each features iHome H6 iPod docking stereos.
Bathing Salon - In a suite that is full of stunning features and surprises, perhaps the most spectacular is the bathing salon. Accessible only by a hidden passageway through the library books is a room like no other. The largest whirlpool at Abigail is surrounded by a large marble and raised panel deck, complete with a private window seat that looks out over Newport. In addition to oversized Mascioni shawl collar velour robes, Italian bath sheets, and terry spa slippers, the salon also offers a table for two, heated towel bars and a pedestial sink. Above and to your sides, a huge Victorian chandelier and wall sconce lighting system. Victorian marble design work throughout.
The suite also has a fully-equipped kitchen that comfortably serves 4 and has a sunset view of Newport bridge and harbor. Through another set of raised panel doors is a marble bathroom that features a handcrafted marble shower.
Located on the third floor. Rates range from $325 - $595. Up to 4 guests may use the suite. Each additional guest beyond 2, is $50 each, per night. If you were not charged during your reservation, you will be at check-in.
