Nestled in Kennett Square's countryside, close to Longwood Gardens and the Winterthur Country Estate, is the "gem
of a bed & breakfast" - Walnut Hill. Our crooked country road is popular with joggers, walkers and bikers. It beckons
the photographer and those who appreciate the beauty of nature. We offer a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of
the work-a-day world, yet provide all of the modern amenities.
Our circa 1840 antique furnished mill house is on land that was
originally granted by William Penn to his daughter Letitia in 1701.
The mill was built in the meadow in front of (what is now) Walnut
Hill about 1760, and during the Revolutionary War the Queen's
American Rangers (a Loyalist unit) camped on the hillside opposite
the bed and breakfast site while en route to the Battle of Brandywine.
A few gracious comments from our guests:
"We came as strangers, left as friends."
"You have mastered the art of bed and breakfast hospitality."
"The nicest, friendliest and most relaxing bed & breakfast we have ever visited."
"Our first American bed & breakfast experience, and I say 'ditto' to all the lovely comments your guests have written in your journal."
"All the extra little touches make such a difference."
Cozy Corner
Period antiques, family heirlooms, oriental carpets and Sandy's
extensive orchid collection are imaginatively displayed. Guests are
invited to curl up with a good book in the "cozy corner" by the
over sized fireplace, play games or take a walk on the nature trail
in the meadow. Perhaps enjoy relaxing in the hot tub after a day of
touring in our wonderful Valley. During the warmer months sit on the
wicker filled porch and listen to the sounds of nature and the
babbling brook.
Front Porch
A full, gourmet country breakfast is served on antique china and
pewter before a bay window in the keeping room. There is always coffee and conversation
available for the "early birds". To prepare you for an incredible day of touring,
we offer sumptuous entrees such as mushroom omelet soufflé with homemade
breads and jams, apple sauce pancakes with hot apple cider sauce or Sandy's famous
French toast. Of course there is always a fruit plate, juices and hot beverages.
Outside the bay window, more than 20 species of birds feed and provide morning entertainment.
Meet other guests for a fun-filled breakfast with stimulating and
interesting conversation and discover what coincidences you share with them.
Refreshments are always available and the cookie jar is never empty!
The Breakfast Table
After twenty-three years, we continue to thoroughly enjoy sharing our
home with our guests. Your hosts are Tom and Sandy Mills. Prior to
opening the bed and breakfast, Sandy worked as a social worker and
had a catering business; she is well known locally for her culinary
expertise and recently completed a cookbook for the Bed & Breakfast
Association. Sandy is also a long time docent at the Winterthur
Museum and Country Estate. Tom retired with over thirty years with
the DuPont Co. followed by a career in consulting. He is a retired
Air Force navigator who now navigates around area golf courses.
