History
Marietta, in 1875 was a boomtown. It had "four of five of the finest iron mills in the state" and a "steam powered sawmill". A railroad running through town and an excellent canal along the Susquehanna River made Marietta a port for the logs which were floated down the river to the saw mill.
The Hiestand brothers owned the saw mill, a planing mill, and a coal yard and were considered the wealthiest men in the area. Benjamin F. Hiestand bought "the farm" on the hill outside Marietta and built a large house for his family. It was a place of peace and serenity, away from the noise and heat of town.
We invite you to come to Susquehanna Manor and feel the calmness and the
quiet surroundings which Mr. Hiestand so enjoyed.
